With its roots deeply embedded in sustainability, it’s no wonder Solar Dynamics is still leading the charge over 50 years later when it comes to green innovation. We recently had a fascinating conversation with CEO George Donnolly to explore how the company has grown far beyond solar and is now investing in a host of exciting technologies.

From Solar Hot Water to Sustainability Pioneer

We began by discussing Solar Dynamics’ current operations, and George started with the company’s origins:

“Solar Dynamics started back in 1974, founded by a priest working with a professor from the University of Toronto. The company has grown significantly over the decades. Today, 51 years later, we sell products into 21 different territories in the region, with operations in Barbados, Saint Lucia, and plans to revitalize even more.

We’ve evolved from just solar hot water systems to a sustainability business, now offering solar photovoltaics, lithium-ion battery generators, solar AC, and solar pool heaters.

Our mission is to create a sustainable future by delivering innovative, flexible solar solutions. We aim to empower communities to adopt clean energy through education, quality service, high-quality products, and a deep commitment to renewable technology. Our goal is to be the best in Latin America and the Caribbean in this space.”

A Personal Drive for Water Security

George also shared a deeply personal passion project: the development of an atmospheric water generator. He emphasized how this idea reflects the company’s broader commitment to community and impact over profit.

“Water is the beginning and the end of survival.

In some territories, water isn’t taken as seriously as it should be. We can’t ignore the fact that in some villages, people have to walk five or ten miles to get a bucket of water. Imagine a village with 5,000 people relying on a single well. While this isn’t the case in developed Caribbean territories, rural areas still face these challenges.”

“We’re developing an atmospheric water generator that simulates condensation to extract pure drinking water from the air. It’s still in its early stages, but we’re excited about its potential.

Our aim is to help communities without clean water access, particularly in rural areas. We want to work with charities and funding groups to identify areas of greatest need and place these generators where they can make a meaningful difference. We’ll provide the equipment and installation at cost. This isn’t about profit. It’s about changing lives.”

Innovation in Waste Management

George also discussed the company’s growing interest in tackling waste, particularly human and inorganic waste such as glass, paper, and cardboard. With traditional landfill systems proving inadequate and harmful to the environment, Solar Dynamics sees an opportunity for innovation.

“We’re exploring small-scale sewage treatment systems that can be installed in individual homes. These can operate for up to 10 years before requiring clearance and turn human waste, which is 70% water, into useful resources.”

These systems use a three-chamber process to dry waste and convert it into nutrient-rich fertilizer. Meanwhile, the liquid is treated and turned into gray water, suitable for toilet flushing, home cleaning, and gardening.

Sustainability That Extends Beyond Products

The company’s sustainability ethos doesn’t stop at product development. George highlighted how Solar Dynamics ensures its entire supply chain reflects the same values:

“When you get into the sustainability space, it becomes part of your ethos. Everything you do, from ISO methods to waste handling, sourcing goods, verifying products, and managing post-installation, must follow a sustainability matrix.

After 50 years in business, we’ve developed a network of suppliers and partners who are also committed to sustainability. We only trade with those who meet our criteria. We use a questionnaire from the IDB to assess new partners and are also preparing to sell carbon credits, which requires strict verification of sustainable practices.”
