CoreZero Serialises the World’s First Carbon Credits from Food Waste

4 May 2023: The climate-tech company CoreZero, together with The Mexican Foodbanking Network (Red BAMX), quantified the prevention of 221,800 tCO2e being released into the atmosphere and transformed this into 221.800 carbon credits. The waste sector is responsible for about 20% of human-driven methane emissions globally, and methane has an 80 times greater warming potential over a 20-year period. Since food waste would be as big as India and Canada combined if it were a country, CoreZero aims to create an actionable impact by supporting food waste minimisation and valorisation initiatives.

As the world’s first carbon credits from food rescue, these revolutionise the way that waste and offsetting are perceived by individuals as well as by NGOs and businesses. With CoreZero’s methodology, the impact that waste diversion has on tackling climate change can be quantified and monetised. Consequently, businesses and NGOs can transform their work’s positive impact into monetary value through carbon credits that are acquirable for companies that want to offset their carbon footprint.

CoreZero’s goal is to transform the 1.3 billion tons of food that are wasted annually by quantifying and monetising the positive environmental impact of food waste minimisation and valorisation projects. They accomplish this by seamlessly integrating into a company’s operations, assessing its positive impacts, and then turning them into carbon reduction units that are monitored. Subsequently, these are examined and converted into tradable carbon credits that are monetised in the Voluntary Carbon Market.

“We are excited to assist in driving incremental value out of waste and monetising efforts to scale up social and environmental impacts: saving more products and reducing the food gap for those in need while contributing to climate change mitigation. Our model can be replicated to scale the impact of zero-waste projects globally, enabling a new and disruptive vertical of offsetting that provides social, economic, and environmental benefits,” says Nicolás Dobler, CoreZero’s sustainability director.
