Shawinigan, Quebec – January 14, 2026 – Waga Energy has been awarded CA$15 million (US$10.8 million) in financial support from Quebec’s Ministry of Economy, Innovation, and Energy (MEIE) for its renewable natural gas (RNG) production project at the Hébertville-Station landfill site in Quebec. The project is being developed in partnership with the Régie des matières résiduelles du Lac-Saint-Jean (RMR), the regional waste management authority.
The funding announcement was made by Éric Girard, Minister for Regional Economic Development and Minister Responsible for the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region, during an official site visit on January 13, 2026. The financial aid represents the final key milestone following the project agreement signed in November 2024, enabling construction of the RNG production unit to proceed.
Supporting Quebec’s climate and energy transition
The funding is provided through Quebec’s Electrification and Climate Change Fund and forms part of the 2025–2030 Implementation Plan of the 2030 Green Economy Plan (PEV 2030). This programme supports technological development projects that contribute to the province’s greenhouse gas reduction targets.
The Hébertville-Station project aligns directly with Quebec’s objective to integrate 10% renewable natural gas into its gas network by 2030, making it a concrete contribution to provincial climate and energy goals.
Turning landfill gas into renewable energy
The RMR serves 50 municipalities across the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region, as well as the Mashteuiatsh community. As part of the project, Waga Energy will build and operate a production unit using its patented WAGABOX® technology, which purifies landfill gas into renewable natural gas suitable for injection into the existing gas grid.
Once operational, the facility will produce up to 188,000 MMBtu per year (55 GWh/year) of RNG – equivalent to the annual energy consumption of approximately 2,900 Quebec households.
By capturing and upgrading landfill gas that is currently flared, the project will avoid the emission of approximately 9,400 metric tons of CO₂ equivalent per year, significantly reducing the region’s carbon footprint.
Integration into the regional gas network
The Hébertville-Station landfill processes up to 203,500 metric tons of waste annually. Today, the biogas generated from organic waste decomposition is captured and destroyed in a flare. Once the WAGABOX® unit is commissioned, this biogas will instead be purified and injected into Énergir’s natural gas distribution network, supplying renewable energy to households and businesses across the region.
Expanding Waga Energy’s Canadian footprint
The Hébertville-Station project marks Waga Energy’s fifth RNG project in Canada. The company already operates four RNG production units: three in Quebec (Saint-Étienne-des-Grès, Cowansville and Chicoutimi) and one in Victoria, British Columbia on Vancouver Island.
This latest investment further strengthens Waga Energy’s role in supporting Canada’s transition to low-carbon, circular energy solutions by turning waste into a reliable source of renewable gas.
