Soria Hosts Castile and León’s First Green Hydrogen Plant
Ingeteam, a Spain-based energy technology group, has officially commissioned its second renewable hydrogen production facility in Spain, this time in the Castile and León region. Located in Garray, Soria, the plant is the first of its kind in the area and is projected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 2,000 tonnes annually.
The plant was developed by Somacyl in collaboration with Redexis and utilizes electrolysers from H2B2 Electrolysis Technologies. The commissioning follows Ingeteam’s earlier hydrogen project at Repsol’s refinery in Biscay, commissioned in October 2024. This milestone reflects the company’s growing influence in Spain’s renewable hydrogen sector and its broader portfolio of over 550 megawatts in hydrogen projects.

Technology Powered by Local Expertise
Central to the project is Ingeteam’s INGECON H2 E-Series rectifier, designed, manufactured, and tested in Navarre, Spain. This rectifier powers the plant’s electrolyser, delivering up to 6,000 amps through a single unit. It has been supplied as a turnkey solution, complete with a medium-voltage transformer.
The plant itself occupies 3,000 square meters within Soria’s Environmental Business Park (EBP), where it will provide renewable hydrogen to meet the park’s energy and heat needs. According to the companies involved, this integration of hydrogen technology is intended to directly support industrial decarbonization efforts.
Jorge Haya, director of Ingeteam’s Hydrogen business, stated: “Contributing our technology to projects close to where they are designed and manufactured allows us to monitor them exceptionally well and helps us continue developing robust equipment. This new contract further strengthens the trust that H2B2 has placed in Ingeteam as a technology partner for its projects. Partnerships and Growing Hydrogen Capacity
The collaboration between Ingeteam, Somacyl, and Redexis emphasizes the increasingly interconnected ecosystem supporting renewable hydrogen development in Spain. H2B2’s choice to again work with Ingeteam, after the SoHyCal project in California, USA, signals industry confidence in the company’s technology.
With a total order book of 550 megawatts in hydrogen projects, Ingeteam now has two installations completed in Spain. These deployments reflect a trend towards regional renewable hydrogen production facilities designed to power local industry while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Hydrogen in the Broader Energy Transition
Green hydrogen is considered a key component in achieving Europe’s decarbonization targets. The European Commission’s Hydrogen Strategy for a Climate-Neutral Europe, introduced in 2020, set goals for installing at least 40 GW of renewable hydrogen electrolyser capacity within the EU by 2030.
Spain has positioned itself as a strong contender in this arena. The Spanish government’s Hydrogen Roadmap, adopted in 2020, aims to install 4 GW of electrolysis capacity by 2030 and support sectors such as transport, industry, and energy storage through renewable hydrogen applications.
The Soria plant’s 2.5 MW capacity may seem modest compared to national targets, but such projects collectively contribute to the groundwork required to scale up. They also support Spain’s ambitions to become a key supplier of green hydrogen within Europe.

Local Impacts and Industrial Integration
The Soria plant’s location within the Environmental Business Park highlights a practical application of renewable hydrogen directly supporting local businesses. Housing water storage tanks, a 150-cubic-meter hydrogen storage system, and control facilities, the plant is structured to function as an integrated energy provider for the park.
Industry analysts suggest that localized hydrogen hubs such as this can play an essential role in de-risking larger investments. By developing small-to-medium-scale projects first, companies and regional authorities can gather operational data and improve confidence in scaling up hydrogen technology.

With two operational plants in Spain, Ingeteam continues to expand its footprint in renewable hydrogen while maintaining a focus on local manufacturing and development. The combination of regional implementation, domestic technology, and industrial partnerships places the company in a strong position as Spain’s hydrogen economy evolves.
For the Castile and León region, the Garray project represents both an environmental and economic milestone. It is not only a step toward emissions reduction but also a signal that renewable hydrogen is moving from concept to reality in more parts of Spain.
