Chameleon Technology is a visionary smart technology solutions company that has been pioneering smart devices since 2010. We are energy experts, focused on helping households and businesses turn complex energy data into something simple, accessible, and genuinely valuable.

Today, more than 20 million people – over a third of homes in Great Britain – have access to a Chameleon in-home display, enabling them to better understand and manage their energy use and spending. Our award-winning hardware captures detailed home energy and environmental data, which we then analyse and enrich through our data services.

We work with energy providers, housing associations, university researchers, and many others. But it is not just businesses that benefit from understanding where energy is being used; our free ivie smart meter app for households helps break down where their home energy is being used, with personalised tips on potential savings.

As Chief Commercial Officer at Chameleon, my priorities include empowering individuals, communities, and organisations to make informed decisions about their energy consumption and drive a positive environmental impact. As a new father, I am motivated by the need to help people across the UK make smarter energy choices that reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and protect the planet our children will inherit.

Why is visibility and control so important for energy customers today?

You cannot reduce what you do not understand. Establishing a clear baseline is the first step to meaningful change. Visibility gives people the knowledge they need to take control of their energy use and make decisions that actually work for them.

Beyond energy costs and mitigating cost of living anxieties, this visibility can have a significant impact on health and wellbeing. For example, identifying conditions that may lead to damp, high humidity, or poor air quality before they reach a tipping point can result in healthier homes, and avoid thousands of pounds in repair and rehousing costs.

What is needed is accurate, live energy and environmental data that reflects what is really happening in a home. With real-time insight into energy use, temperature, and humidity, housing providers and homeowners alike can make informed decisions to create warmer, safer, and more energy-efficient homes.

How can energy companies apply real-time energy data more effectively in customer engagement?

The wider value of real-time energy data is often overlooked. When energy data is combined with home environmental data, a much clearer picture emerges of how a home is actually being used.

This deeper understanding allows energy companies to engage customers in more meaningful and relevant ways. Knowing when and where energy is consumed helps inform households how and when they are using the most energy, which in turn can pinpoint the changes they can make to use less energy.

Our ivie app, for example, has a feature called Activity Insights which does just this. There is no point turning off every light switch if it turns out your soaring energy bills are actually down to a faulty fridge freezer in your garage. Offering that kind of visibility, beyond simply billing for usage, is invaluable.

At an operational level, real-time energy data plays a critical role in balancing the grid. Demand flexibility is becoming increasingly important, encouraging consumers to shift their energy use to off-peak times through initiatives such as peak-saving schemes.

As the energy system transitions toward more sustainable and intermittent sources, providers must be increasingly conscious of how energy is generated, stored, and used, all while accounting for realistic consumer behaviour. Real-time data enables better forecasting, more responsive grid management, and smarter incentives that align customer behaviour with system needs.

In 2026, home energy technology will move from passive monitoring to active optimisation. Energy prices will likely never fall back to the levels they once were – so households can take control of their energy costs with the adoption of self-generation and storage, with technologies such as solar panels, batteries, and heat pumps becoming increasingly mainstream.

Chameleon’s smart energy solutions will play a key role in this transition by providing real-time insights that help consumers truly understand their energy use and make informed decisions tailored to their homes. By optimising for individual needs, these insights will guide households toward the most effective low-carbon technologies – supporting the creation of homes that are more efficient, resilient, and sustainable.
