A Flexible Future for Electric Vehicles in the UK
The rise of electric vehicle (EV) sales in the UK is undeniable, with October 2023 alone seeing nearly 30,000 new EV registrations—a 25% increase compared to the same period last year. Yet, despite this growth, the journey toward mainstream adoption still faces significant challenges. Experts argue that car subscription models could play a pivotal role in accelerating the transition to greener mobility.
According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), EV sales in the UK are up 14% year-to-date. However, many consumers remain hesitant about making the switch, citing concerns over high upfront costs, charging infrastructure, and resale value. David Bailey, professor of Business Economics at Birmingham Business School, believes car subscription services offer a viable solution.

Car Subscriptions as a Gateway to EVs
“Car subscription models are a great way for consumers to ‘dip their toes’ into the EV market,” says Bailey. “Drivers are sometimes hesitant about adopting this new technology due to high upfront costs and fears about range and charging, as well as uncertainty regarding resale value.”
Bailey highlights the flexibility of subscription services as a key advantage, enabling consumers to experiment with EVs without long-term commitments. This model allows drivers to test whether EVs align with their lifestyles, offering a low-risk entry point into greener mobility.
A Digital-First Approach to Subscriptions
One company leading the charge in this space is :Dribe, a Danish car subscription service owned by Semler Group, Denmark’s largest automotive player. CEO Jesper Hill-Kjærsgaard emphasizes the benefits of a fully digital customer journey and open-ended subscriptions.
“Our platform gives subscribers full control and the flexibility to adapt their vehicle choices to match their needs,” says Hill-Kjærsgaard. “When infrastructure uncertainty arises, people might switch back to conventional fossil-fuel cars. But once they experience the many joys of EVs, they often stick with the technology.”
This adaptability, he notes, empowers consumers to weigh the pros and cons of different car options under one seamless subscription model.
Reducing Resource Waste with Smart Mobility
Beyond individual convenience, car subscription models also promise broader sustainability benefits. Peter Wells, professor of Business and Sustainability and director of the Center for Automotive Industry Research, argues that subscriptions can help optimize resource consumption in the automotive sector.
“When consumers pick large cars to meet rare needs, the green transition of the automotive industry is challenged,” Wells explains. “Car subscriptions allow consumers to change cars as needed, reducing the production of oversized all-in-one vehicles and minimizing resource use.”
Wells acknowledges, however, that shifting the automotive industry away from traditional ownership models will not be without challenges. Companies like :Dribe are addressing this by blending traditional automotive practices with digital innovation to ease the transition.
Overcoming Industry Resistance
“At :Dribe, we believe sustainable change begins with a deep understanding of the industry’s needs and requirements,” says Hill-Kjærsgaard. “Our concept and digital platform leverage over 100 years of industry knowledge from the Semler Group to unite tradition with modern mobility solutions.”
As :Dribe expands its reach globally, its subscription model aims to simplify car access for both consumers and businesses, aligning with a future-focused vision of transportation.
The Road Ahead for Greener Mobility
The potential of car subscriptions to advance green mobility is immense, offering solutions to many of the barriers slowing EV adoption. By providing flexible, cost-effective access to EVs, these models can empower consumers to make informed choices while reducing their environmental impact.
For the UK, embracing this innovative approach could be instrumental in achieving ambitious climate goals and fostering a culture of sustainable transportation. As Bailey puts it, “We need to create opportunities for consumers to experience the benefits of EVs without feeling locked in. Subscriptions could be the game-changer we need.”
With companies like :Dribe leading the way, the vision of a greener, more flexible transportation future is closer than ever.
