Sustainable Business Magazine speaks to Erika Enquist, Senior Manager of Global Quality and Sustainability at PrimaLoft, about how the company’s innovative technologies are redefining not just consumer thermalwear but the entire lifecycle of synthetic materials.
Few companies can trace their origins to a single challenge issued by the U.S. Army, but PrimaLoft Inc. is one of them. In 1984, the US military posed a question that would reshape the outdoor apparel industry: could a synthetic material match the warmth and compressibility of goose down while also performing in wet conditions? A textiles company named Albany International Corp rose to the challenge by patenting the first synthetic microfiber for apparel, which it named PrimaLoft. In doing, Albany International Corp created an entirely new category of synthetic, waterproof insulation. That technology became the foundation on which four decades of innovation have since been built.
Today, PrimaLoft’s signature red shield appears on products from more than 1,000 global brands, ranging from mountaineering jackets to everyday footwear. The company’s portfolio spans insulation, fabrics and fibers engineered to deliver performance across a wide spectrum of conditions and end uses.
Where the first chapter of PrimaLoft’s story was defined by a pursuit of innovation in performance, the current one is defined by an equally ambitious goal: making that performance as innovatively sustainable as possible.
Achieving that ambition means the philosophy needs to be embedded throughout the company’s organizational structure. The executive leading PrimaLoft’s global environmental, social, and governance (ESG) work also oversees quality systems, a pairing that reflects a deliberate philosophy.Erika Enquist, who holds that dual role, explains why:
“ESG sets the framework for responsible performance, and quality systems provide the controls, verification, and data integrity that make those commitments measurable and defensible. Without strong testing and certification infrastructure, ESG would remain aspirational rather than operational.”
That infrastructure includes an ISO 17025-accredited R&D laboratory in the United States and a Commercialization and QC laboratory in China, as well as compliance with a suite of respected third-party standards including bluesign, the Global Recycled Standard (GRS), OEKO-TEX, and the Higg Index. The result is a company that can make environmental claims not on the basis of aspiration alone but on rigorously verified data.

PrimaLoft® P.U.R.E.™
For most of the insulation industry’s history, manufacturing has relied on fossil-fuel-powered equipment running inefficient processes at high temperatures. PrimaLoft has taken a different approach with P.U.R.E., or Produced Using Reduced Emissions. This technology platform is a direct challenge to the fossil fuel model.
Rather than treating emissions as an unavoidable byproduct of production, P.U.R.E. redesigns the manufacturing process itself, replacing fossil-fuel-dependent equipment with electric-powered machinery and transitioning partner factories to renewable energy sources based primarily solar power.
The result is a verified reduction in carbon emissions of 50% or greater compared to traditional manufacturing methods. That figure is not self-reported. Testing, inspection, and certification company SGS conducts annual audits across PrimaLoft’s partner facilities, evaluating products made through both conventional and P.U.R.E. processes to independently quantify the emissions difference. As Ms. Enquist describes it, this third-party verification is central to the technology’s credibility:
“On an annual basis, products are evaluated through both the traditional manufacturing process and our P.U.R.E. manufacturing process, allowing SGS to quantify the emissions reductions achieved through P.U.R.E. technology. This independent verification is critical to ensuring the integrity and credibility of our technology.”
Scaling P.U.R.E. has required significant upstream changes throughout PrimaLoft’s supply chain. Since the technology was first introduced in 2019, PrimaLoft’s partner factories have undergone meaningful transformations, upgrading energy infrastructure and replacing production equipment. New production lines powered by renewable energy have been added to expand capacity as the technology has rolled out across more product lines. The company has tried to make this process collaborative rather than prescriptive, with PrimaLoft working alongside manufacturing partners to find the best solutions rather than simply mandating their change.
By January 2025, PrimaLoft had transitioned its flagship PrimaLoft ® Gold Insulation to exclusively use P.U.R.E. manufacturing. PrimaLoft ® Silver followed shortly after, and PrimaLoft Black is slated to be the next product line getting the P.U.R.E. treatment. The conversions also extend to PrimaLoft® ThermoPlume+ and the PrimaLoft ® Active product range.
PrimaLoft® ReRun™ and the Circular Economy
Reducing the emissions footprint of production is one axis of PrimaLoft’s sustainability work. A separate but equally critical axis lies at the end of a product’s life. The textile industry is one of the world’s largest contributors to landfill waste, and synthetic insulation has historically been difficult to recycle or repurpose. The PrimaLoft® ReRun™ technology platform is designed to address that problem directly.
The PrimaLoft® ReRun™, launched in October 2025 as PrimaLoft’s inaugural textile-to-textile recycling platform, transforms post-consumer and post-industrial textile waste into high-performance insulation, breaking the conventional linear model in which a garment is made, used, and discarded. The ambition is both environmental and practical: to create insulation that is not only manufactured more responsibly but also designed with end-of-life reuse in mind, producing a material built for longevity.
“Our goal at PrimaLoft is to be the most sustainable insulation brand, inspiring tangible environmental and business impact for our planet and partners,” says Ms. Enquist. “With our new ReRun technology platform, we are breaking the linear model of consumption. Our goal with ReRun is to transform textile waste into high-performance, sustainable insulation designed for longevity.”
What distinguishes The PrimaLoft® ReRun™ from simpler recycled-content approaches is its use of two distinct processes. First, a mechanical recycling method shreds and blends reclaimed textile waste with PrimaLoft fibers to create new insulation products. This method is used to create ThermoPlume™ PrimaLoft® ReRun™, which is a loose-fill insulation composed of 100% recycled content, 30% of which is mechanically recycled pre-consumer footwear uppers. Second, there is a more technically demanding regenerative process that breaks down discarded textiles at the molecular level before remaking the material into insulation that delivers performance on par with best-in-class insulation. This results in the Silver PrimaLoft® ReRun™. These two new innovations are the first products to leverage PrimaLoft® ReRun™ technology.
PrimaLoft’s sustainability work also encompasses the company’s broader recycled content program, through which insulation and fabrics are produced using post-consumer recycled materials, in particular recycled plastic bottles.
One challenge the company openly acknowledges is the absence of standardized industry metrics for circular economy impacts such as landfill diversion. Formal frameworks for quantifying the environmental savings from waste-to-material conversion have yet to be established at the industry level. Ms. Enquist notes that PrimaLoft is effectively ahead of the regulatory curve on this front, operating in a space where governing bodies and standards organizations are still catching up with the pace of innovation.
The Road Ahead
If the progress made to date reflects what PrimaLoft is capable of, the company’s near-term roadmap suggests its pace of innovation is only going to continue.
The conversion of PrimaLoft’s core product lines to P.U.R.E. manufacturing is ongoing, with the PrimaLoft Black line the next major milestone. Beyond that, the goal is comprehensive: to bring every product in PrimaLoft’s portfolio under the P.U.R.E. umbrella.
In 2025, PrimaLoft launched a suite of six new products that were manufactured with P.U.R.E. technology from day one, a notable shift from the retrofit approach that has defined much of the rollout to date. The centerpiece of that launch is PrimaLoft® UltraPeakTM, unveiled in October 2025 and described by the company as its highest-performing insulation to date.
PrimaLoft UltraPeakTM uses a new fiber architecture in which specially engineered structural fibers intermingle with surrounding microfibers to create a scaffolding effect within the insulation structure, capturing more air and trapping body heat more efficiently than previous generations. The result is an insulation that combines thermal performance with down-like softness while being made entirely from recycled content and manufactured.
The launch also introduced PrimaLoft® ThermaStretchTM, an insulation offering 30% greater elasticity than comparable products for greater freedom of movement, and PrimaLoft® HeatSphere™, , which incorporates a reflective layer between two layers of insulation to boost heat retention without adding weight. Building P.U.R.E. into new product development from the outset rather than converting existing lines represents a maturation of the company’s approach, one in which reduced-emissions manufacturing is a default rather than an upgrade.
Ms. Enquist frames the full scope of PrimaLoft’s transition in terms of the product portfolio:
“We’ve worked to convert ThermoPlume and the Active line over to P.U.R.E. These conversions reflect our deep commitment to responsibility and our goal of scaling our more sustainable technology across PrimaLoft’s entire product portfolio.”
More broadly, PrimaLoft’s long-term ambition is to operate at the intersection of performance and responsibility without treating those as competing priorities. The company’s position in the supply chain gives it considerable leverage: insulation sits at the heart of some of the most technically demanding products in the outdoor and activewear markets, and the brands that carry PrimaLoft’s red shield are increasingly attentive to the environmental credentials of the materials they specify. PrimaLoft now collaborates with more than 1,000 brand partners to bring high-performing, sustainable products to consumers.
What distinguishes PrimaLoft’s approach from that of others making sustainability commitments is the degree to which its claims are anchored in independent verification and measurable data. The combination of third-party audits, accredited laboratory infrastructure, and recognized certification standards means that the company’s environmental narrative is not built on marketing language alone. As the industry as a whole moves toward greater transparency and accountability, PrimaLoft’s years-long head start looks increasingly like a competitive advantage as well as an ethical drive.
