UK Power Networks has completed an upgrade to its London energy networks which will benefit 30,000 homes across Hackney and Walthamstow. UKPN installed 22km of cable and ducting across four new circuits and energised the final circuit in November 2025. Electrification is placing extra demands on our energy networks. The energy infrastructure upgrade will improve network resilience and provide sustainable, reliable energy to local communities.

UKPN Energy Infrastructure Upgrade

UK Power Networks began an energy infrastructure upgrade for London residents of Hackney and Walthamstow in July 2017. The distributor installed over 22km of cable across four new circuits. This infrastructure will improve energy reliability for homes, schools and businesses in the community. UKPN office and field staff partnered with Enigma Scaffolding, D&R Jointing and the Clancy Group to complete the project in November 2025.

Errol Lord, Project Manager at UKPN, thanked the local community for their patience during the works: ‘Throughout the duration of the works, we have maintained close collaboration with the community to minimise disruption and ensure everybody knew what was happening. We are grateful for the patience and understanding demonstrated by the residents, and we take pride in the collective effort that has brought this project to fruition.’

The Benefit of Improved Network Resilience

The energy infrastructure upgrade reflects the growing demand on London energy networks. The transition from combustible fossil fuels to renewable energy sources is driving electrification. The upgrade improves the resilience of the network to cope with the addition of EVs, heat pumps and solar panels. UKPN have invested over £8 billion in their energy networks since 2011, and show consistency in their commitment to safe, reliable and sustainable energy provision.
