Aberdeen Technical School Students Secure Patent for Food Waste Prevention System

Aberdeen Technical School is redefining how the cold chain logistics sector approaches food waste prevention through student innovation. The Hong Kong boarding school has announced that its students’ intelligent monitoring system, “Eye of the Fresh Environment,” was officially granted a Hong Kong patent as published in the Hong Kong Intellectual Property Journal in April 2026. This groundbreaking project can reduce fresh produce spoilage rates from 20% to below 5%, preventing 15 tonnes of waste per 100 tonnes of produce while generating revenue increases exceeding HKD 450,000 for enterprises. The system addresses the global crisis where 1.3 billion tonnes of fresh food are wasted annually due to cold chain failures.

Advanced Semiconductor Technology Delivers Early Warnings

The “Eye of the Fresh Environment” system utilises advanced organic semiconductor technology to create micro-sensors that monitor temperature, humidity, and gas concentrations in real-time without generating heat. Combined with AI cloud analysis, the system provides early warning of food spoilage up to 48 hours in advance, automatically notifying distributors of potential issues.

The development team comprised students Wong Tim Shing (Form 2), Chan Lai Him, Lau Ho Yin, and Pang Wai Chiu (Form 4), who identified significant gaps in existing market solutions. Current systems are typically designed for large-scale industrial use, making them expensive, bulky, and inflexible for smaller operations.

Team member Pang Wai Chiu explained:

“Using organic semiconductors makes the monitors both affordable and energy-efficient.”

Filling Critical Market Gaps

The inspiration for the project emerged from real-world observations of spoiled fruits and vegetables during transportation. The student team recognised that existing monitoring systems failed to serve small-to-medium-sized transport operations and startup businesses effectively.

Their solution features a low-cost modular design and real-time local warning mechanism specifically optimised for these underserved market segments. The system’s flexibility and affordability address critical barriers that have prevented smaller logistics operators from implementing effective cold chain monitoring.

Team member Lau Ho Yin noted:

Championship Success Validates Innovation

Before securing patent protection, the “Eye of the Fresh Environment” system demonstrated its commercial viability by securing the Overall Grand Championship at the “Innovate and Lead – The New Wave Logistics Competition.” The Aberdeen Technical School team prevailed over 40 competing teams from Hong Kong and Macau, showcasing the system’s potential to transform cold chain logistics.

The competition success validated the system’s practical applications and market readiness, providing crucial recognition for the student innovators’ approach to addressing food waste challenges through technology integration.

Boarding Education Cultivates Innovation Excellence

The project’s success reflects Aberdeen Technical School’s distinctive boarding education approach, which emphasises holistic development through structured daily routines and communal living. Students took initiative to form their development team during the 2025 summer break, integrating school-based innovation projects into real-world research and development.

Founded in 1935 and managed by the Salesians of Don Bosco, Aberdeen Technical School operates as one of Hong Kong’s few government-subsidised secondary schools offering boarding programmes. The school’s philosophy of “learn to study and learn to be” nurtures balanced academic development alongside STEM learning and personal growth.

Student Lau Ho Yin shared how boarding life enhanced their development process:

“Living away from home required self-discipline in scheduling and cutting down on unproductive phone usage, allowing more focus on critical thinking and social observation.”
