The Modern Money Myth: How Our Push for Modernity Hurts the Economy and the Planet 

In our pursuit of a digital and modern financial system, we are often quick to dismiss the old in favour of the new. But what if the most progressive path forward isn’t a choice between one and the other? The true future of money may lie in a balance—leveraging digital innovation while preserving the proven resilience of physical cash and the surprising environmental benefits of traditional materials like paper. 

Today’s technological revolution is unprecedented in its speed and scope, transforming every industry and corner of the globe. Nowhere is this disruption more immediate than in our financial systems, which are rapidly being reshaped by a wave of new digital advancements that change how we store, move, and manage our money. 

The pressure on financial institutions and retailers to modernize our payment systems is immense and unfolding on multiple fronts. The push is not only for digital payments to become faster, more widespread, and inclusive, but also for physical cash to evolve, becoming more durable and environmentally friendly. Consequently, the entire financial infrastructure—the systems of rules, institutions, and technologies that govern how money moves—is undergoing a significant transformation. It is now tasked with integrating a host of new requirements, leading to a rapid evolution where a range of new payment channels and alternatives compete for market share, while the familiar banknote itself is being re-engineered with innovative materials like polymer plastic to ensure its longevity. 

Industry experts confirm that the pressure to modernize is intense across the entire financial landscape. According to Sara Trygg Rudberg, Head of Design for Crane Currency, “If there is one trend I see continuing, it is the increased time pressure on central banks in conceptualizing, designing and issuing new, modern banknotes. The complexity across all project dimensions is greater today.” This sentiment is echoed in the broader market, where, as KPMG notes, evolving customer expectations are the primary force driving financial institutions and retailers to overhaul their payment systems. 

While this wave of innovation promises universal benefits, a closer examination reveals a more complex picture. The rapid modernization of all aspects of finance may not be as uniformly advantageous as it initially appears. 

When digital finance fail 

The global push to modernize finance is undeniable, often defined by the rapid ascent of cashless payments. Driven by the promise of ultimate convenience—leaving your wallet at home and accessing services with a single click—this shift is accelerating as consumers increasingly “vote with their wallets” for digital money. In response, both public and private financial institutions are pouring their energy into meeting this digital demand. 

However, beneath the surface of the digital financial system lies a vulnerability: a deep and often unacknowledged dependence on technology that could prove catastrophic in a crisis. A major power outage, a natural disaster, or even a critical systems failure could paralyze an economy that has prioritized digital payments over physical cash. 

This risk is not merely theoretical, as a recent incident in the U.K. shows. In late January 2025, Barclays bank suffered a three-day outage of its online services, attributed to a “severe degradation” in its mainframe computer. The timing coincided with a deadline for income tax payments, leaving many customers unable to pay. The result was a failure of over half of all online transactions, demonstrating how a single technical glitch can disrupt essential financial obligations for millions. 

The widespread closure of high-street bank branches across the U.K. intensified the crisis, leaving many with no physical location to resolve their issues. In response to the outage, a Barclays spokesperson advised customers to rely on cash. Yet for a significant portion of the population, this guidance was useless. With their finances held almost exclusively in digital bank accounts and little to no physical cash on hand, they were effectively locked out of their own money. The failure had real-world consequences. As Ruth, a 39-year-old self-employed cleaner, told the BBC, she spent hours trying to access savings to buy milk for a baby and food for five other children she is looking after. Her experience underscored a glaring weakness: when digital systems fail, those without a cash buffer are left dangerously exposed. 

Situations like the recent Barclays outage help explain why governments, including in the UK, are moving to protect access to cash. These actions formally acknowledge what many already know: physical currency remains a crucial and integral part of the modern economy. A recent European Central Bank (ECB) study provides the data to support this, revealing that cash serves distinct and persistent roles across all demographics. While older generations may prefer it for daily spending, younger adults are more likely to store cash at home as a safeguard. For all ages, cash becomes a trusted fallback during unforeseen events—from geopolitical instability and concerns over digital payment security to outright failures in digital infrastructure. Consequently, researchers around the world increasingly argue for a balanced financial ecosystem that includes digital and cash options, a need reinforced by another study we’re going to consider. 

Deceptive polymers 

A recent study from Oxford Economics, “The Environmental Impact of Digital over Cash Payments,” suggests that governments should aim for a balance between payment types to achieve the best environmental outcome. The report, which compared point-of-sale transactions in Italy, Finland, and Germany, acknowledges that many consumers prefer cash for its convenience and its ability to make them more aware of their spending. 

Considering this behavioural insight, the researchers warn that a push for digital payments can inadvertently increase overall consumption, potentially cancelling out any environmental gains from digital transactions. Therefore, the report advises policymakers to support the entire payment infrastructure to maximize its efficiency. As Oxford Economics states, “It is important to balance the needs of the cash and digital payment systems to enhance the subsystem’s overall impact or utilization.” 

This consideration is now a central focus for monetary systems, with both digital and physical currency sectors making strides to become more environmentally friendly. In digital finance, this involves powering data centres with renewable energy and optimizing digital infrastructure. For cash, the shift means adopting sustainable production methods and new, eco-friendly materials. 

One of the most visible innovations in the quest for greener cash has been the shift from paper to durable polymer plastic. Initially promoted as a clear environmental upgrade, this change was championed by institutions like the IMF, which in a 2016 article titled “The Future Is Plastic,” asserted the material’s superiority and suggested public scepticism would fade. 

This notion gained widespread traction, leading countries like Canada, the UK, and Australia to adopt plastic banknotes—and created a striking contradiction. Canada, for instance, is actively implementing a nationwide “Zero Plastic Waste” action plan to encourage sustainable consumption. Yet, the very currency used to purchase these eco-friendly alternatives is made from a polymer that can persist in the environment for centuries, shedding microplastics long after its useful life. And while central banks rightly track and recycle old banknotes, this does not solve the core issue. Products made from this recycled plastic will eventually degrade, continuing a cycle of pollution that impacts both current and future generations. 

In light of growing environmental concerns about plastic, several major economies are reaffirming their commitment to traditional paper banknotes. The United States, for instance, has no plans to replace its widely circulated cotton-linen currency. Similarly, Japan takes great pride in its yen, which is printed on a unique, durable paper made from the fibres of the mitsumata shrub.  

This choice of material is a cornerstone of the yen’s renowned security. The distinct, crisp feel of the paper is the first and most immediate test of authenticity, a feature that contributes to Japan’s exceptionally low counterfeiting rate—one of the lowest in the world. This tactile security is then augmented by advanced technological features like holograms and watermarks. Together, they create a multi-layered defence system, ensuring that paper currency remains a remarkably safe, reliable, and easily verifiable form of payment under any circumstances. 

In conclusion, the modern monetary system is not moving in a straight line toward a purely digital future, but is instead undergoing a more complex evolution. While digital platforms offer undeniable efficiency, the role of physical cash is not being eliminated but redefined. The most likely outcome is a complementary financial ecosystem, where cash and digital payments coexist, each serving vital needs. The ongoing modernization of banknotes—focusing on enhanced security and sustainable production—ensures that physical currency will continue to be a secure, reliable, and integral part of a balanced and resilient economy for the foreseeable future.
