Sustainable Farming – How To Do It Right

Growing your own produce may seem like the first step towards embracing a sustainable lifestyle. However, before you proclaim yourself a sustainability champion, pause and check whether your farming practice is eco-sensitive or causing soil and water pollution without you realising.

The United Nations Environment Programme revealed that unsustainable agricultural practices pollute soil, water and air and can cost global economies $3 trillion annually. 

There is a growing popularity of organic produce and a shift away from industrialised farming, which dominated much of the previous century. Many allotment growers and professional farmers struggle, despite their best intentions, to implement sustainable practices. So, how can you do it right? 

Let’s explore some easy-to-implement strategies for eco-friendly growing methods that reduce pollution, reduce dependence on chemical fertilisers, and support your health.

Reduce Overconsumption and Wastage

The first step to reduce pollution and carbon footprint is to halve food waste. To determine the consumption-to-wastage ratio, maintain an allotment diary, a monthly planner that will help you determine how much you are producing, the quantity of consumption, the shelf life or storage life of the produce and what is getting wasted. 

For example, on your allotment, if you are only growing pumpkins, you may end up with more produce than you can consume or gift. Storing it for too long can lead to spoilage. Instead, you can find other companion plants to grow alongside. This improves soil quality, acts as natural pest control, provides shade and allows for natural pollination.

A monthly planner will also help you carefully plan and monitor your growing cycles and plan your crops accordingly. This lowers your dependency on artificial fertilisers and other unsustainable practices.

Water Conservation

A critical component of sustainable farming is adapting water-conservation methods. An automatic water irrigation system can be a great place to start. An automated system can monitor environmental conditions and adjust the watering schedule accordingly, reducing water consumption and runoff, which often cause leaching of topsoil and nutrients and lead to water pollution. Overwatering can also be detrimental to plant growth and production, and this issue is easily remedied with these automated systems.  

Rainwater harvesting is also a key strategy for water conservation and management. The UK receives sufficient rainfall throughout the year, and by collecting and storing rainwater, you reduce your reliance on groundwater and act as an alternative water source during dry spells. 

Growing Local Variants

Growing exotic plants can feel exciting; however, they come with their own set of challenges. When growing crops suited to the UK climate and soil, you often need to create artificial conditions that mimic native conditions. This can include using fertilisers and excessive watering. Even then, the yield might not be satisfactory. 

Local variants of crops are more sturdy and can easily adapt to the natural climate conditions, and you can get good-quality produce. 

Mulching and Composting

Weeds compete with your crops for nutrients, water and space. Using chemical weed suppressants might do the job, but they harm nearby crops, degrade soil quality, and cause pollution. An eco-friendly alternative involves mulching. 

Mulching involves adding a layer of organic material, such as wood chips, bark shavings, straw, or newspaper shavings, on top of the soil. This helps with moisture retention, weed suppression and temperature control and prevents water erosion during monsoons. 

Composting is another important sustainable farming technique. To start a compost, begin by adding a green layer, which includes kitchen and allotment scraps such as vegetable peels or crop debris. To this add a brown layer comprising cardboard pieces, twigs and dried leaves. Add 2-3 parts of brown waste to 1 part of green waste. 

You can use a compost bin and keep it in a shaded area. Add a little water at frequent intervals and keep mixing the compost layers to ensure proper aeration.  

Composting helps to improve soil quality and nutrient and moisture content and acts as an organic fertiliser. 

Crop Rotation

Crop rotation is yet another beneficial technique for improving soil health, nutrient content, fertility and structure. An important benefit involves increasing biodiversity in the allotment, suppressing weeds and breaking down pest and disease outbreaks. 

In this process, you plant crops from different plant families in an alternate manner. For instance, if you start with legumes (peas, broad beans and French beans) in year one, then next year, you plant Brassicas (Brussels sprouts, cabbage and turnips). The following year, plant crops from the root family (beetroot, carrot and celeriac), and in the final year, plant crops from the tomato and potato families. 

Once completed, you repeat the cycle. Those with large allotments or farms can divide them into multiple cross-sections and plant different plant families in different parts.

Sustainable farming is the future. Britain is moving towards net zero consumption by 2050 to balance its greenhouse gas emissions. Eco-friendly farming practices play a significant part in this regard.

Sustainable agriculture uses 56% less energy and generates 64% less GHG emissions per hectare. This farming practice also supports greater biodiversity. Initially, it might seem labour-intensive, but over time, you will reap excellent benefits.
