Sustainable Business magazine speaks to Vijay Balvin of Refserv Limited, a Trinidad and Tobago-based industrial services provider delivering mechanical, civil, electrical, and instrumentation support across the energy and manufacturing sectors. With operations spanning shutdown support, project execution, planned maintenance, and HSE compliance, the company is known for pairing technical excellence with community-minded values. 

“We don’t just deliver projects, we build partnerships rooted in safety, integrity, and sustainable growth,” says Vijay Balvin, Managing Director at Refserv. We spent some time with Vijay hearing more about their company philosophy that runs through every layer of the organization, with a mission that balances performance and purpose. 

From responsible procurement to youth development, Balvin is helping lead a business that’s proving sustainability in industrial services is both possible and necessary. 

Supply Chain Collaboration Needs to be More than a Cost Equation

Balvin emphasizes that sustainability begins with intentional supplier choices. Refserv works closely with local contractors and vendors who share their values around safety, ethics, and environmental responsibility.

Internationally, suppliers are evaluated on more than cost alone. “Whether it’s sourcing tools or major equipment, we aim to reduce waste, minimize our carbon footprint, and build transparent supplier relationships. We also make a point to support smaller, emerging businesses, giving them opportunities to scale while ensuring our operations benefit the broader local economy.”

Balvin explains, factors like packaging efficiency, product lifecycle, and carbon impact are all part of the decision-making process. Supporting smaller and emerging businesses is also a priority, with a focus on promoting local economic growth alongside project delivery. 

Building Impact On and Off the Job Site

Refserv’s sustainability efforts go far beyond compliance. On the environmental front, the company has implemented structured waste segregation and disposal procedures on active projects and is making progress toward more energy-efficient practices across internal operations.

At a community level, Balvin is committed to ensuring Refserv’s work benefits the wider public. 

“On the community side, we sponsor youth development programs, sporting events with local communities, support local training initiatives aimed at preparing young people for careers in the industrial and energy sectors.”

When it comes to their internal sustainability strategy, this is built on three core pillars: operational efficiency, workforce development, and environmental responsibility.

The company has enhanced its behavior-based safety (BBS) program to foster a stronger safety culture, an approach Balvin believes is essential for long-term success. “Fewer incidents and stronger safety culture directly support long-term sustainability,” he explains.

“We’ve implemented site-specific HSE controls, energy-saving work practices, and reduced-paper digital reporting systems.”

Looking to the future, Balvin has a clear vision for where Refserv is headed. Plans include formalizing the company’s Environmental Management System with ISO alignment and expanding STOW+ compliance, particularly in waste reduction and pollution prevention.

The team is also exploring ways to incorporate renewable energy into its field operations, with potential partnerships on joint projects with clients. Social sustainability is also in focus, with a new internal mentorship framework designed to train future leaders in sustainable business practices.

“Our long-term vision is to become a model for environmentally responsible industrial contracting in the Caribbean, balancing performance with purpose,” says Balvin.

A Defining Project, A Personal Legacy

Of all the projects he’s worked on, Balvin points to the EIP Upgrade at Nutrien as a defining moment for both Refserv and himself. As one of the most technically complex projects the company has delivered, it required multidisciplinary coordination, major equipment overhauls, and execution within a high-stakes industrial environment. For Balvin, it was also deeply personal. 

“That project took place during one of the most difficult times in my life. I lost my father while it was underway,” he shares. “He was instrumental in how we approached it, and delivering it successfully is something I’ll always be proud of. That experience reminded me of the strength of my team and the legacy of the knowledge and discipline my father would have impacted. It wasn’t just a business milestone, it was a moment of shared leadership, resilience, and purpose.”

Looking to the future

Refserv’s work shows how sustainability can be embedded into day-to-day operations, from reducing waste on-site to supporting local suppliers and investing in training for young people entering the industry.

Led by Managing Director Vijay Balvin, the company continues to take practical steps toward long-term environmental and social impact, while maintaining its focus on safe, efficient service delivery.

As Refserv looks ahead to future goals like ISO alignment, renewable energy integration, and leadership development, it’s clear the company is working to balance strong performance with a clear sense of purpose.
