Imagine standing in a deep, cloudy forest surrounded by towering trees and vibrant orchids. Above you, the calls of monkeys and exotic birds. Rainforests host immense biodiversity and store carbon for centuries. Yet, these untouched landscapes are vanishing at alarming rates. Deforestation and climate change are threatening hundreds of thousands of species every year, while the Amazon Rainforest itself is slowly reaching ist own tipping point. This is exactly where TeamClimate wants to make a difference.
For more than 10 years TeamClimate’s goal is to make impactful climate action as accessible and straightforward as possible. The small Vienna-based Start-Up is working together with scientifically verified and independent climate protection projects all over the globe. With the help of a big community TeamClimate has already saved over 130.000 tons of CO2. Now they are moving forward into a new field: Renaturation! The team has spent the past year developing a new way for individuals and organizations to support high-integrity conservation efforts.
With their new project “The Wild Impact Club” the team goes a step further. The goal: a movement designed to channel support into certified, science-based conservation projects that restore endangered ecosystems and protect species at risk. Through biodiversity credits, members contribute to long-term ecological impact – starting with their first project in Colombia.
El Globo: A Living Laboratory for Restoration
After extensive research, they selected the Banco de Hábitat Bosque de Niebla – El Globo, a 340-hectare nature reserve in the cloud forests of Támesis, Colombia. Managed by Terrasos and registered with the Colombian Ministry of the Environment, El Globo is a 30-year conservation initiative that combines preservation with active restoration. Once a cattle ranch heavily logged and converted to pasture, the land is now being regenerated. Forty hectares are dedicated to restoring damaged areas, while the remaining 300 hectares protect pristine cloud forest. The reserve is home to 34 mammal species, over 130 bird species, and countless endemic plants, making it a biodiversity hotspot with global significance. Here, for example, we give an introduction into some of the incredible species found at El Globo! Careful monitoring of those species and land-use changes not only provides important data for natural scientists, it also ensures the integrity and effectiveness of the project.
Biodiversity matters
The biodiversity crisis is not confined by borders. Ecosystems worldwide face threats from deforestation, pollution, and climate stress. Each year, tens of thousands of species and millions of hectares of forest are lost. Especially high-impact zones like Colombia’s cloud forests now play an important role in in securing the planets wide diversity of animals and plants. Currently there are 36 of those recognized „Biodiversity Hotspots“. These regions contain a disproportionately large share of the world’s plant and animal species, but at the same time are in urgent need of conservation. While protecting wildlife is important everywhere on the planet, these hotspots provide examples where large scale conservation is especially impactful and efficient.
But projects like El Globo don’t just protect wildlife. The ecosystem of the nature reserve regulates water cycles, purifies air, stores carbon, and builds climate resilience. Investing into El Globo also means investing in the local communities. Sustainable development is encouraged and made possible through direct investments, environmental education, scientific projects and sustainable job opportunities around the nature reserve. Conservation has to be sustainable in the long-term, that’s where many other reforestation projects are currently failing. And making the practice of renaturation and preservation attractive for local communities is key.
