TIPA® Compostable Packaging is redefining how pet food brands approach sustainable packaging design. The compostable packaging innovator has secured second place in the Sustainable Design category at the prestigious DIELINE Awards 2026, one of the packaging industry’s most competitive honours. This latest success story involves Hawaiian pet food brand Pawniolo Pets and sustainable packaging manufacturer WildKind Packaging, demonstrating how fully home-compostable solutions can match conventional plastic’s performance while supporting circular economy principles. The award-winning collaboration created packaging that breaks down naturally without generating microplastics or contributing to landfill waste.
Addressing Island Waste Challenges
The partnership emerged from Pawniolo Pets’ unique operational constraints and sustainability commitments. The Hawaiian brand produces pet treats using byproducts from local cattle farming, ensuring zero agricultural waste. Operating on a small island with limited waste collection capacity, the company needed packaging that could support small production quantities whilst achieving ambitious environmental goals.
TIPA partnered with WildKind Packaging to develop a home-compostable flexible pouch using the company’s proprietary bio-based films. The resulting solution delivers the same durability and product protection as conventional plastic packaging, whilst completely biodegrading under home composting conditions within months.
Innovation Without Compromise
The collaboration addressed multiple technical challenges simultaneously. TIPA’s home-compostable films support high-quality printing capabilities, allowing Pawniolo Pets to communicate their brand story effectively. Meanwhile, WildKind’s manufacturing approach accommodates smaller production volumes, eliminating the minimum order quantity barriers that often prevent smaller brands from accessing sustainable packaging solutions.
Rodrigo Castaneda, VP & GM, North America, at TIPA Compostable Packaging, said:
“At TIPA, our mission is to create compostable packaging solutions that elevate the brands we partner with while also maintaining the integrity of their product. Partnering with like-minded, sustainability-focused brands like Pawniolo Pets and WildKind Packaging was a no-brainer. This collaboration proves that packaging can be beautiful, functional, and sustainable. We are ecstatic to be recognised at the DIELINE Awards 2026 for this innovative project.”
Recognition At Industry Summit
The DIELINE Awards celebrate innovation and creativity in consumer packaging design, honouring brands that push boundaries through exceptional design work. This year’s winners were announced and showcased at LUXE PACK New York on May 6-7, 2026, providing global visibility for breakthrough packaging innovations.
The recognition highlights how sustainable packaging solutions are gaining mainstream acceptance within the competitive packaging design landscape. TIPA’s success demonstrates that environmental responsibility and design excellence are increasingly viewed as complementary rather than competing priorities by industry leaders.
Scaling Circular Packaging Solutions
TIPA’s approach reflects broader industry momentum towards circular economy principles in flexible packaging. The company’s solutions are designed to work with existing manufacturing machinery and supply chain systems, enabling global scalability without requiring infrastructure overhauls. Their compostable polymer technology undergoes the same biodegradation process as organic waste, mimicking nature’s packaging solutions.
This project highlights how innovative materials science can be integrated into established packaging workflows whilst supporting smaller brands’ sustainability ambitions. The collaboration between TIPA, Pawniolo Pets, and WildKind demonstrates that environmental innovation and commercial viability can align when partners share complementary capabilities and values. As the packaging industry continues evolving towards sustainable alternatives, partnerships like these establish new benchmarks for performance and environmental responsibility.
