enfinium, a leading UK energy-from-waste operator, has celebrated the first year of its Repair Café Support Fund, with 15 Repair Cafés across the UK benefitting from critical funding. Launched in March 2024, the initiative highlights enfinium’s commitment to promoting circular economy practices by empowering community-led repair efforts.
Sustaining Repair Communities
The Repair Café Support Fund, totalling £60,000 over three years, was established to help Repair Cafés reduce waste sent to landfill by repairing household items free of charge. Repair Cafés are essential community hubs that foster reuse, reduce environmental impact, and save residents money.
During its inaugural year, £16,079 in funding was distributed across 15 Repair Cafés situated near enfinium’s facilities in England and Wales. The financial support enabled these initiatives to cover operating costs like rent, purchase new equipment, and train volunteers to enhance their repair expertise.
758 Items Given a Second Life
Throughout the year, the supported Repair Cafés successfully repaired 758 items, giving a new lease of life to many household essentials and cherished belongings. Repairs ranged from the everyday to the extraordinary, such as:
A 60-year-old carriage clock, preserved for future generations.
An ornate egg and vintage instruments, including a banjo and melodeon.
A vintage record player, cherished by a visually impaired attendee with a love for music.
These repairs not only reduced environmental waste but also helped local communities retain items of emotional and practical value.
Fostering Sustainability and Education
A significant aspect of the fund focuses on building future repair skills. By encouraging youth participation and volunteer training, the initiative helps cultivate awareness and understanding of repair within younger generations. This effort aligns with broader sustainability goals, ensuring that the value of repair continues to thrive in local communities.
Philip Curds, Head of ESG & Sustainability at enfinium, emphasised the fund’s role in promoting the circular economy saying that “Repair Cafés play a critical role in reducing waste and promoting the circular economy in the communities where we operate. Through this initiative, we help extend the life of cherished items, divert waste from landfill, and save residents money. The success of this first year inspires us to support even more Repair Cafés moving forward.”

Jon O’Connor, Chair of Trustees at the Folkestone Repair Café, shared his experience, “The funding from enfinium has been a huge boost. It has enabled us to improve our services, reach more people, and strengthen our role in reducing waste. We would encourage any Repair Café to consider applying next year.”
Building for the Future
Applications for the second year of the Repair Café Support Fund will reopen on 1st January 2025 and run until 31st May 2025. Repair Cafés located within 30 miles of enfinium’s facilities in Kent, North Wales, West Yorkshire, and the West Midlands can apply for funding of up to £1,500 per annum.
