A Strategic Partnership to Advance Renewable Energy
In a significant step toward advancing offshore renewable energy solutions, Jord Group has officially become a shareholder in SwitcH2 BV. This investment is set to propel the final design phase of SwitcH2’s ambitious 300 MW Offshore Floating Ammonia Project, a venture poised to redefine sustainable energy production.
SwitcH2, a developer specializing in industrial-scale floating green hydrogen and ammonia production facilities, has been making waves with its groundbreaking Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) technology. The addition of Jord Group, a process plant engineering leader with over five decades of experience, brings valuable expertise to the table, reinforcing the project’s potential for success.

A Milestone for the Energy Transition
The agreement, signed between Jord Group and SwitcH2, underscores a collaborative commitment to accelerating the deployment of green ammonia production. JOGS, a subsidiary of Jord Group based near Rotterdam, will play a critical role in finalizing the design of SwitcH2’s FPSO platform. Known globally for its expertise in designing and constructing topside modules for FPSO vessels, JOGS’ involvement adds another layer of engineering and operational proficiency to the project.
SwitcH2’s flagship initiative—a 300 MW floating production unit based in Portugal—will integrate leading-edge renewable energy technology. The platform will leverage Ohmium’s PEM electrolyzers, ThyssenKrupp’s ammonia synthesis systems, and ABB’s advanced electrical and control systems. Powered by a combination of nearshore wind and solar energy, the FPSO unit will produce green ammonia directly onboard, which will then be transported to local users and key industrial hubs in the Benelux region.
Industry Leaders Weigh In
SwitcH2 Managing Director and co-founder Saskia Kunst emphasized the strategic value of the partnership, stating, “We are very pleased to be able to tap into JORD’s wealth of chemical engineering and construction experience. Our shareholding base has superb complementarity in skills, know-how, and strategic positioning in the renewable energy space, and jointly we strive for FID on our first project soon.”
For Jord Group, this investment aligns with its longstanding commitment to innovation in the energy transition. JOGS Managing Director Michel Bosman highlighted the significance of the collaboration, saying, “Jord is fully committed to the energy transition and delighted to have this opportunity to both invest in and help construct this landmark, future-focused project.”
BW Offshore, a leading provider of offshore production solutions and a key investor in SwitcH2, also plays a crucial role in supporting the project. With decades of experience in FPSO operations, BW Offshore’s expertise will help ensure the success and scalability of SwitcH2’s floating green ammonia production model.
The Growing Role of Green Ammonia in Sustainable Energy
As the global push for decarbonization accelerates, green ammonia has emerged as a critical component of the sustainable energy ecosystem. Unlike conventional ammonia production, which relies on fossil fuels, green ammonia is synthesized using renewable electricity and water. This process significantly reduces carbon emissions, making it a viable alternative for industries seeking to transition away from traditional fuels.
The offshore production model pioneered by SwitcH2 further enhances sustainability by utilizing floating platforms to harness renewable power. By eliminating the need for extensive land-based infrastructure, this approach minimizes environmental impact while optimizing production efficiency.
Implications for the Renewable Energy Industry
The partnership between Jord Group and SwitcH2 represents a broader trend in the renewable energy sector—one where traditional engineering firms are pivoting toward sustainable innovations. The integration of proven FPSO technologies with green hydrogen and ammonia production showcases how existing expertise in offshore engineering can be leveraged for the clean energy transition.
Furthermore, the SwitcH2 initiative has the potential to set a precedent for future offshore hydrogen and ammonia projects. With increasing demand for sustainable fuel alternatives, successful implementation of this model could lead to widespread adoption across various regions, further accelerating global decarbonization efforts.
A Future-Focused Collaboration
As Jord Group and SwitcH2 progress toward finalizing the design phase, industry stakeholders will be watching closely. The project’s success could unlock new opportunities for offshore green hydrogen and ammonia production, demonstrating the viability of large-scale, floating renewable energy solutions.
With its blend of engineering expertise, cutting-edge technology, and strong investment backing, this partnership is more than just a business deal—it is a forward-looking commitment to redefining energy production for a sustainable future.
