VoltH2, a European developer of green hydrogen infrastructure projects, is set to construct the first large-scale green hydrogen plant in the Benelux Region (Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg). Part of the Vision Hydrogen Corporation, VoltH2 will open the plant in Vlissingen, an industrial port by the North Sea, owing to its existing high voltage power and gas infrastructure. The area also has access to large renewable power producing assets for the supply of green electrons.
VoltH2 comment that the 25 MW green hydrogen plant will produce up to 3500 tons of green hydrogen per year (scalable to 100 MW or 14,000 tons). The Vlissingen hydrogen plant will also have access to the European Hydrogen Backbone, the dedicated hydrogen infrastructure that spans across Europe.
As part of a joint venture with Virya Energy, an organization founded in 2019 by Colruyt Group and Korys which focuses on the development, financing, and construction of renewable energy assets, VoltH2 intends to build a second plant in Terneuzen. VoltH2 project the additional green hydrogen plant will have a capacity of 3500 tons of hydrogen per year (scalable to 75 MW or 10,500).
“The VoltH2 projects for two hydrogen electrolysers in Vlissingen and Terneuzen is a good example of how we want to lead the way with green hydrogen in the province of Zeeland,” explains Jo-Annes de Bat, Provincial Executive of Zeeland. “This is an excellent initiative that shows how we can bring the sustainability of industry and transport in combination with the large supply of sustainable electricity in the province which is a big step forward in the short term.”
Sweco, a Stockholm-based engineering firm with a green focus, has been commissioned by VoltH2 to design the planned plants in Vlissingen and Terneuzen. VoltH2 claims both plants will feature dedicated hydrogen storage and multimodal transport system access to facilitate distribution.
