British Library’s Solar Heat Revolution

The British Library, one of the UK’s most iconic cultural institutions, has unveiled the country’s largest solar heat installation in partnership with Naked Energy and CBRE Global Workplace Solutions (GWS). The project promises to reduce the Library’s carbon emissions by 55 tonnes annually while preserving its invaluable national collection.

Pioneering Solar Heat Installation

Spanning 712.5m² of rooftop space, the installation features 950 advanced solar collectors from Naked Energy’s Virtu product line. This technology combines solar heat and electricity generation, making it the world’s most energy-dense solar solution.

Generating 216 MWh of renewable energy per year, the system will provide hot water and heating while maintaining precise environmental conditions essential for preserving over 170 million cultural items housed within the Grade I-listed building.

Meeting Environmental and Heritage Goals

Balancing sustainability with heritage conservation, the project secured planning permission due to the Virtu system’s low-profile design, ensuring that the Library’s historic architecture remains unaffected and invisible from street level.

Patrick Dixon, Director of Estates and Construction at the British Library, highlighted the project’s dual benefits:
“This project is part of the Library’s commitment to environmental action, supporting our Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy launched during Green Libraries Week.”

Industry-Leading Solar Innovation

Naked Energy’s Virtu technology outperforms standard solar PV panels, cutting four times more carbon emissions. Christophe Williams, Founder and CEO of Naked Energy, said:
“The urgent need to decarbonise heat has long been under-recognised. We hope this project inspires others in the public sector to transition from fossil fuels.”

The system’s ability to address the often-overlooked carbon intensity of heat production aligns with broader global sustainability goals. Naked Energy’s recent £17m investment from E.ON Energy Infrastructure Solutions and Barclays underscores the international scalability of its solar solutions.

The Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, managed by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and delivered by Salix Finance, funded the project. Jon Benford, Managing Director at CBRE GWS, expressed pride in the Library’s green transformation:
