A Passion for Repairs Sparks a Thriving Business
What started as a high school student’s knack for fixing phones has grown into a pioneering sustainable tech company. Casey Sather, founder and CEO of FixMyTek, began his journey repairing broken screens for school friends and teachers. Today, his Bristol-based business employs 17 people and repairs hundreds of devices each month, tackling the UK’s growing e-waste problem.
By the time Sather was studying Astrophysics at the University of Bristol, his repair side hustle had gained so much traction that he needed to hire fellow students to keep up with demand. Recognizing the potential for growth, he formalized the business after graduation, transforming it into a sustainability-driven company that now supports both individuals and businesses in reducing electronic waste.

Fighting E-Waste Through Repairs and Refurbishment
Electronic waste is a growing environmental challenge, and the UK is among the worst offenders. “I was shocked to learn that the UK is the second-largest producer of e-waste per capita in the world,” said Sather. FixMyTek is tackling this issue head-on by offering businesses sustainable IT solutions, including e-waste recycling, device refurbishment, and eco-friendly technology services.
Through its partnerships with local businesses, FixMyTek helps companies recycle their old electronics, refurbishing laptops and other devices to extend their lifespan. “A lot of organisations have ambitious green targets, and we’re proud to help them achieve those goals,” Sather noted.
Investing in the Next Generation of Technicians
FixMyTek’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond its core services. Part of its profits go toward free community workshops, where Bristol locals can learn how to repair and upgrade their own devices. This initiative empowers individuals to make their technology last longer, reducing waste and cutting costs.
The company also maintains strong ties to its university roots, prioritizing the hiring of young talent. Currently, FixMyTek employs seven full-time staff and ten part-time technicians, many of whom are students gaining valuable hands-on experience in tech repair and business operations. Repair hubs at the University of Bristol, UWE Bristol, and the sustainable department store Sparks Bristol make it easier for students and local residents to access affordable and sustainable repair services.
From Start-Up to Sustainability Leader
Sather’s journey from student entrepreneur to business leader was fueled by his participation in the University of Bristol’s start-up competition. The support he received during his time at university played a crucial role in turning his vision into reality. “I started this business to learn about running a company and to offer quality repairs to my friends and fellow students. It was a chance for us to work together and grow along the way,” he said.
His passion for entrepreneurship, coupled with his drive to create sustainable solutions, has propelled FixMyTek into the business-to-business (B2B) space, where it now collaborates with organizations looking to reduce their environmental footprint while cutting costs on IT equipment.
