
“Beyond50 Denim” Project Tackles Barriers to Hemp Integration in Global Denim Supply Chains
Amsterdam, Netherlands – 2025 – Fashion for Good, the global innovation platform advancing sustainable transformation in fashion, has announced the launch of “Beyond50 Denim: Combining Cottonised Hemp and Green Chemistry.” The initiative, developed in collaboration with leading apparel brands BESTSELLER, C&A, PDS Limited, Reformation, and Target, aims to accelerate the large-scale adoption of hemp-based alternatives to conventional cotton in denim production.
The project combines two pioneering technologies—SEFF’s Nano-Pulse™ cottonised hemp fibres and FIBRE52™’s proprietary green chemistry formulations—to demonstrate that hemp denim can rival or exceed traditional cotton denim in comfort, durability, and aesthetics, while offering significant environmental benefits.
Redefining Denim’s Future
Cotton remains the dominant fibre in denim production, yet its environmental footprint—particularly in terms of water consumption, pesticide use, and land intensity—has prompted the industry to seek viable alternatives. Hemp, a natural fibre requiring less water, fewer inputs, and less land, has long been recognised as a sustainable substitute. However, technical and processing challenges have limited its mainstream use.
The Beyond50 Denim project addresses these long-standing barriers by integrating advanced fibre modification and clean processing technologies into denim manufacturing. By combining SEFF’s Nano-Pulse™ process, which converts raw hemp into fine, soft, cotton-like fibres, with FIBRE52™’s low-temperature, biodegradable chemistry, the project seeks to create a scalable, commercially viable pathway for sustainable denim.

Hemp cultivation offers multiple sustainability advantages over cotton. It can grow rapidly in diverse climates, requires minimal irrigation, and naturally suppresses weeds, reducing dependence on chemical herbicides. Additionally, hemp enriches soil health through deep root systems that prevent erosion and promote carbon sequestration.
Yet, despite these advantages, the harshness of hemp fibres and the lack of compatible spinning infrastructure have slowed industry adoption. Technologies such as SEFF’s Nano-Pulse™ are redefining hemp’s potential by producing cottonised fibres suitable for conventional spinning systems, while FIBRE52™’s chemistry eliminates the need for high-temperature scouring and bleaching, cutting energy use and wastewater generation.
