In a significant stride towards sustainable construction practices, British Gypsum has announced that approximately 90% of its products are now distributed using The Pallet LOOP’s distinctive green pallets. This development comes just eight months after the initial deployment of these reusable pallets for British Gypsum’s bagged plaster products.
A Commitment to Sustainability
The Pallet LOOP, a circular economy pallet reuse scheme tailored for the UK construction sector, has issued over 700,000 of its robust green pallets since May of the previous year. These pallets are designed for repeated use, being collected from construction sites, building projects, and merchant yards nationwide, thereby reducing waste and promoting environmental responsibility.
Steve Ottaway, Head of Operations at The Pallet LOOP, expressed his satisfaction with the progress, stating: “From a standing start, we are delighted with what we have achieved with our pallet collection rates. As well as demonstrating the effectiveness of a closed loop pallet collection system, our return rates underscore the willingness of all parts of the construction industry to embrace a different way of working.”
Impressive Recovery Rates and Financial Incentives
The initiative has seen remarkable success, with pallet recovery rates reaching 30% in November and December—three times the typical industry average of 10%. To facilitate this process, The Pallet LOOP has established over 7,000 collection points across the country, enabling companies to return pallets efficiently. Participants in the scheme can benefit financially, receiving up to £4 for each green LOOP pallet returned for reuse.
Industry-Wide Adoption and Impact
The adoption of The Pallet LOOP’s system is gaining momentum, with a growing number of builders’ merchants, housebuilding companies, and principal contractors integrating the service into their operations. This shift not only contributes to significant waste reduction but also offers substantial carbon savings, aligning with the construction industry’s broader sustainability goals.

Once registered, booking a collection is straightforward and can be done through the same contact points. The Pallet LOOP operates an extensive network of pallet manufacturing and collection hubs in partnership with Scott Pallets, ensuring a seamless process for users.
