Carpentry and Joinery students from Stephenson College, Coalville in Leicestershire are using their skills to support the local community. The students are participating in a four week boardwalk regeneration project to improve the accesibility and enjoyment of Snibston College Park.
Students Use their Carpentry Skills at Snibston Colliery Park
The Level 2 carpentry and joinery students from Stephenson College are working to restore the boardwalk in Snibston Colliery Park. The project is in collaboration with Leicestershire County Council and Tilbury Douglas and aims to improve the safety and accessibility of local park infrastructure. Students will use their skills to remove the old boardwalk and replace it with a sturdier frame and secure fittings.
Dave Baldock, Curriculum Quality Lead for Construction Trades at Stephenson College said: “Our students have approached this project with focus and responsibility, ensuring all fixings are properly secured to meet safety requirements. Despite adverse weather conditions, they are committed to completing the task without complaints, demonstrating their strong work ethic and cooperation skills.”
Supporting Young Futures
Stephenson College specialises in technical and trade qualifications including university level HND/HNC programmes. Last year was the College’s 100th year of helping to support young people to make the first steps on their professional career path. Projects such as the Snibston Colliery Park Boardwalk give students the opportunity to apply their skills outside the classroom for the first time.
Level 2 Carpentry and Joinery student, Riley, said “This is the first opportunity I’ve had to do anything like this, and I’m really enjoying it so far. It’s been great to get hands-on experience of a carpentry job in the real world, and it will be nice to see the boardwalk functional again.”
Helping Out Local Communities
The Snibston Colliery Park Boardwalk Project enables students to see the real benefit that their skills can bring to local communities. It aims to motivate students in their chosen profession, and bring significant benefit to the local area.
Snibston Colliery Park is located within the National Forest. It is an important part of the local community, offering walking and bike trails, art sculptures and nature reserves. Students working to rejuvenate the boardwalk are helping to improve public enjoyment of a cornerstone of the local community.
