
A new sustainable design for electric vehicle charging points has been launched from last week’s UN Climate Change Conference (COP26).
Designed in conjunction with the Royal College of Art, PA Consulting has revealed a new design for electric vehicle charging points.
Commissioned in August, the project seeks to support local authorities across the United Kingdom by enhancing the experiences of electric vehicle (EV) drivers, while also creating electric vehicle charging points that blend in with the UK’s surroundings.
The new design for also aims to encourage the large-scale adoption of EVs, which many argue is a necessary step towards achieving net-zero, by offering a simple and efficient electric vehicle charging system for drivers traveling across the country.
“The value of design isn’t just in creating a brilliant product, but in solving problems and changing behaviours,” said Dan Toon, Design and Innovation Expert at PA Consulting.
“Combining our end-to-end innovation expertise with a focus on human-centric design principles, we spoke with motorists, consumer groups and industry to draw out the real needs of people and businesses and design a charge point that combines practicality and inclusivity.”
To design the new charging points, PA Consulting engaged a group of existing and potential EV drivers from across the UK to understand the challenges they face while using electric vehicles.
The team also consulted more than 30 different organisations across the EV industry to gain the perspective of local authorities, consumer groups, and charge point manufacturers and operators.
As a result, PA Consultancy claims their design is aligned with accessibility standards, infrastructure strategy, and local authority guidance.
“Combining functionality and inclusivity, this design will have a profound impact on how we think about charging EVs and accelerate the transition to zero emission vehicles,” said Warwick Goodall, Transport Expert and Project Lead at PA Consulting.
“Ultimately, this is essential to deliver the reduction in carbon emissions and meet our climate change commitments.”
