UK Innovation Challenge aims to transform offshore wind operations through cross-sector technologies
Ørsted, a global leader in offshore wind, has launched the UK Digital Innovation Challenge, a new initiative designed to bring digital ingenuity from outside the energy sector into the heart of offshore wind operations.
The programme, developed in partnership with Digital Catapult and the Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Catapult, is open to UK-registered companies from all industries. The aim is clear: adapt cutting-edge technologies to improve efficiency, safety, and sustainability in offshore wind operations and maintenance (O&M).

Through targeted support and collaboration with Ørsted and Digital Catapult, we are helping UK businesses move pioneering offshore wind technologies closer to commercialisation and global markets.”

Offshore Wind at a Crossroads
As the UK accelerates its journey to net zero, offshore wind has become the backbone of the national energy strategy. The UK already hosts 12 operational Ørsted wind farms and remains the largest offshore wind market outside China. But as turbines age and fleets expand, the sector’s reliance on traditional O&M practices—manual inspections, weather-dependent access, and reactive maintenance—is under pressure.
Digitalisation offers a way forward. By leveraging tools such as predictive analytics, automation, and immersive training, operators can reduce downtime, cut costs, and improve safety in some of the harshest working environments.
The UK government’s target of 50 GW of offshore wind by 2030 makes the case for innovation even stronger. Scaling capacity without smarter operations risks rising costs and inefficiencies. Ørsted’s challenge directly addresses this inflection point, inviting solutions that can make O&M fit for the future.

A Cross-Sector Call to Innovators
The challenge is not limited to energy startups. Ørsted and its partners are deliberately looking beyond the renewables industry, encouraging participation from sectors as varied as fintech, transport, healthcare, defence, telecoms, entertainment, and infrastructure.
Eligible technologies should be at Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) 3–7, ensuring a balance between early-stage innovation and market readiness. Examples of potential applications include:
- Predictive maintenance: AI-powered failure prediction, condition monitoring, anomaly detection
- Operations modelling and optimisation: Digital twins, virtual simulations, lifetime extension strategies
- Automated inspections: Remote defect detection, real-time reporting
- Logistics and resource management: Weather analytics, vessel scheduling, smart inventory tools
- Remote maintenance and workforce enablement: Augmented reality troubleshooting, VR training, maintenance robotics
- Supply chain transparency: Digital ledgers, smart contracts, trust-building tools
Proposals outside these categories are also welcome, provided they strengthen offshore wind O&M and can withstand the realities of remote, offshore environments.
Industry Leaders Weigh In
For Ørsted, the challenge is part of a wider strategy to strengthen its innovation ecosystem while supporting UK businesses. For its partners, the programme represents a showcase of how cross-sector collaboration can drive decarbonisation.

Rewards and Real-World Testing
Two winning companies will each receive £50,000 worth of bespoke support over six months, including access to Ørsted’s engineering expertise, validation with real-world data, and commercialisation guidance.
Perhaps more importantly, winners may gain the chance to pilot their solutions within Ørsted’s global portfolio—an opportunity that could provide not only credibility but also direct access to commercial deployment at scale.
The selection process begins with written applications, followed by pitches from 5–6 shortlisted companies. Final judging will weigh innovation, feasibility, scalability, impact, and team capability, alongside alignment with Ørsted’s strategic goals.

Digitalisation as a Sustainability Driver
While offshore wind already ranks among the cleanest energy sources, the O&M phase remains resource-intensive. Vessel trips for inspections, manual repairs in difficult weather, and lengthy downtime all carry hidden environmental costs.
Digital solutions can change this equation. Predictive models reduce unnecessary vessel journeys, automated inspections improve safety and cut fuel use, and digital twins extend turbine lifespans by spotting issues before they escalate.
As the offshore wind fleet grows, these efficiencies scale too—making O&M digitalisation not only a commercial imperative but also a sustainability driver.
