Energy grids now run smarter software than most banks. Oil fields use predictive maintenance algorithms that catch equipment failures before the next shift starts. Utilities are integrating solar and wind into infrastructure designed in the 1970s, held together by SCADA systems older than some of their operators. The pressure to modernize is real — and so are the risks of getting it wrong. Here are six vendors actually doing this work.
DXC Technology

DXC is one of those companies where the client list does the talking. Two of the three largest utility providers in the world. Two of the top five oil and gas majors. That’s infrastructure for hundreds of millions of people — not a pilot program.

AVEVA

UK-based AVEVA grew out of Cambridge University’s engineering department and merged with Schneider Electric’s industrial software division in 2018. Their flagship product, the AVEVA PI System, is standard equipment in refineries and LNG terminals worldwide — deployed in over 1,000 facilities from Rotterdam to Singapore.
Core capabilities:

- Digital twin solutions for full asset lifecycle management
- Predictive performance tools integrated into existing DCS environments
If you’ve stood in a refinery control room watching process data in real time, there’s a reasonable chance it was running through PI System. Not beautiful software — just reliable.
Kongsberg Digital

Norway’s offshore oil history runs deep, and Kongsberg Digital is a product of that environment. A subsidiary of Kongsberg Gruppen, they build simulation and digital twin platforms for offshore energy operations.
Their flagship, Kognitwin, creates live digital twins of offshore platforms. Equinor uses it. Shell uses it. Instead of scheduling a helicopter to inspect a compressor, you check the digital copy first.

C3.ai

San Francisco-based C3.ai is an enterprise AI platform with energy as one of its biggest verticals. Their partnership with Baker Hughes is the clearest example — C3.ai’s platform runs predictive maintenance across Baker Hughes’ global operations.

- Predictive maintenance models reducing unplanned downtime on compressors and rotating equipment
- Energy demand forecasting and grid load optimization
- ESG data management for regulatory compliance
The suite was co-branded as “BHC3 AI” for a while. The branding evolved, but the technology is still in production.
Yokogawa Electric

Yokogawa has been in industrial automation since 1915. Over a century of process control across chemicals, refining, and power generation — that’s depth software-only companies can’t replicate. Their digital framework, Yokogawa OpreX, puts that history to work.
Core offerings:
- Distributed control systems for power plants and refineries
- Asset integrity management for aging 1980s–1990s infrastructure
- Industrial IoT and edge computing integration
Their systems control some of the largest LNG facilities in Qatar and Australia. On a single cargo where margins run into the tens of millions, downtime isn’t debatable.
Bentley Systems

Pennsylvania-based Bentley Systems builds infrastructure engineering software. Power plants, substations, pipelines — all of it needs to be modeled and maintained digitally before anyone touches the physical asset.
Their iTwin platform enables:
- Digital twin creation from engineering drawings and live sensor data
- Asset lifecycle management from design through decommissioning
- Integration with GIS, ERP, and operational systems
The OpenUtilities suite runs with transmission and distribution operators across North America and Europe. And iTwin is gaining traction in renewables — wind farm operators use it to track turbine health across hundreds of installations from a single interface.
Bottom Line
The energy sector has no shortage of IT vendors. What it lacks are vendors who understand that a software bug here has physical consequences. These six have geographies and technical focuses that differ — but all have references that go beyond a marketing page.
