This initiative supports the company’s £1.7 billion investment in carbon capture and storage (CCS), promising to generate up to 1.2 million tonnes of carbon removals annually.
Enabling Carbon Measurement at Scale
Enfinium’s adoption of radiocarbon dating, also known as carbon-14 technology, marks a critical advancement in emissions monitoring. Widely used in fields like archaeology and human health, this technology distinguishes between biogenic and fossil-derived CO2 in waste emissions. As around 50% of unrecyclable waste comprises biogenic material—such as food, plants, and paper—tracking these emissions accurately will help quantify carbon removals when CCS technology is fully operational.
Carbon Removal Ambitions
The company’s Net Zero Transition Plan, announced in May 2024, outlines a bold commitment to CCS installation across its EfW sites. This investment could permanently lock away millions of tonnes of CO2 underground, making enfinium a frontrunner in the emerging carbon removals market.

Successful Trials and Deployment Plans
Since January 2024, the technology has been trialed at enfinium’s Kemsley facility, the UK’s only EfW plant operating under a Contract for Difference. Following the trial’s success, carbon-14 measurement equipment from ENVEA will be installed at all four operational sites by year-end and at two upcoming facilities, Kelvin and Skelton Grange, upon commissioning in 2025.
