THG Launches Enhanced Cosmetic Recycling Initiative
THG PLC, a digital-first consumer brands group, has expanded its recycle:me program, targeting the beauty industry’s waste crisis by making recycling easier for consumers while helping brands meet new sustainability regulations. The initiative aims to recycle one million cosmetic packaging units within its first year.
Tackling Beauty Industry Waste
The beauty industry generates an estimated 120 million packaging units annually, with only 9% currently recycled, according to the British Beauty Council. THG’s recycle:me program offers a streamlined, no-cost recycling solution through partnerships with its beauty retailers LOOKFANTASTIC and Cult Beauty.
Consumers can recycle any brand’s cosmetic packaging by using a Royal Mail doorstep collection service, ensuring accessibility and convenience. Packaging collected will be repurposed into new products such as beauty packaging prototypes or school equipment.

Industry Collaboration and Innovation
THG partnered with MYGroup, a leading waste management firm, to process and repurpose the collected waste. Steve Carrie, Director at MYGroup, highlighted the industry’s recycling challenges:
“The UK recycling system often causes confusion, meaning only a small percentage of cosmetic packaging is recycled. We’re proud to work with THG to simplify recycling and reduce landfill waste.”
Additionally, THG collaborated with Metrisk to create a dedicated recycle:me app. Consumers can scan packaging, arrange doorstep collections, and track reward points for eligible products. Alistair Morelli, Co-Founder and Director at Metrisk, emphasized the app’s capabilities:
“Our app provides full traceability, allowing brands to report confidently on the lifecycle of their products.”
Data-Driven Sustainability Compliance
With Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) regulations requiring brands to manage their packaging waste, recycle:me offers detailed recycling data essential for regulatory compliance. Mark Jones, THG’s Chief Sustainability Officer, explained the scheme’s value:
“For brands, recycling schemes are incredibly complex and costly. With recycle:me, we provide a cohesive industry approach backed by the data needed for EPR compliance.”
Supporting the Circular Economy
As the program aligns with the UK’s sustainability goals, it highlights the beauty industry’s potential for circular economy integration. By turning waste into valuable resources, recycle:me sets a new standard for environmental responsibility.
The initiative’s launch coincides with Recycle Week 2024, themed ‘Rescue Me,’ emphasizing the importance of rescuing recyclable items from waste bins. With recycling data transparency, consumer incentives, and industry collaboration, THG’s recycle:me initiative promises transformative change in how beauty brands manage their environmental footprint.
