Q: Please introduce yourself to our readers and tell us a bit about your role and organization.

“I’m Giancarlo Marcaccini, CEO of Yogi Tea and a board member of The Yogi Foundation.

Yogi has been a pioneer in herbal wellness for nearly five decades, inspired by the wisdom of Ayurveda and guided by a simple mission: to serve people through products and purpose.

During my time with Yogi, we’ve focused on strengthening ethical supply chains, advancing regenerative agriculture in regions such as Sri Lanka and Guatemala, and deepening the connections between our growers, our consumers – or as we call them, contributors – and the earth itself.

The Yogi Foundation was born from this same commitment, to support farming communities and to reimagine how a brand can foster shared wellbeing. Through the Foundation, we’re exploring creative philanthropy to redefine what it means to be in community and in relationship with the living world.”

Q: What inspired The Theory of Spice series, and how does it reflect Yogi Tea’s core sustainability philosophy?

The Theory of Spice emerged from a desire to bring people closer to the true essence of our ingredients—to see them as living expressions of place, culture, and care, inseparable from the lives and communities that nurture them.

Each film was created in close collaboration with local farming communities to ensure authenticity and accuracy, blending cinematic storytelling with real on-the-ground and cultural narratives.

At Yogi, we believe sustainability begins with awareness. When people see where their ingredients come from and understand the human and ecological stories behind them, they begin to recognize that wellness and sustainability exist in continuous relationship.

The series is both cinematic and philosophical. It asks viewers to consider an ingredient not just as something we consume, but as something that connects us to the land, to each other, and to the unseen systems that sustain life. It’s an invitation to reframe how we think about value, origin, and reciprocity.”

Q: How does the collaboration with Nelixia strengthen Yogi Tea’s commitment to measurable and ethical sourcing practices?

“Our collaboration with Nelixia, and their CEO Elisa Aragon, represents a shared belief that transparency and traceability are not simply sustainability checkboxes—they are expressions of respect.

Together, we’re going beyond certification to co-create sourcing models that are deeply human and regenerative. Nelixia’s expertise in Central America enables us to support farmer livelihoods and holistic ecosystem restoration in ways that are guided by the community itself, ensuring that solutions reflect local knowledge and long-term wellbeing.

It’s a relationship rooted in reciprocity. We’re demonstrating that ethical sourcing is not just about mitigating risk but about generating shared value and possibility. Where business growth and ecological wellbeing reinforce one another.”

Q: What impact do you hope the series will have on consumer awareness around ingredient origins and biodiversity protection?

“Our hope is that The Theory of Spice invites people to rediscover the sacred relationship between humans and nature by feeling curiosity about where their food comes from, recognizing that those origins become part of who they are.

When you realize that the cardamom in your cup carries a whole world within it – the soil, the climate, the culture, the farmer’s hands – sustainability stops being abstract. It becomes real, tangible, and deeply human.

While it’s still early, the initial response to the films has been deeply encouraging. Viewers have shared how the stories shift their perspective from seeing spices as commodities to understanding them as expressions of culture and place.

Our goal is to move the conversation from sustainable products to sustainable relationships. Biodiversity thrives when communities thrive, and by showing the interconnected systems behind each ingredient, we hope to inspire greater awareness and appreciation. These films mark the beginning of a conversation that will continue to reveal how storytelling can deepen our sense of relationship with the natural world.”

Q: How are Yogi Tea and The Yogi Foundation supporting farming communities and sustainable agriculture through this project?

“The Yogi Foundation was created to extend Yogi’s purpose beyond commerce, collaborating directly with the communities that sustain and inspire us.

In the regions where The Theory of Spice was filmed, we’re supporting community-development initiatives that strengthen both human and environmental wellbeing, from access to clean water and education to regenerative-agriculture programs that restore soil health and biodiversity.

Beyond farming communities, the Foundation also supports initiatives across the creative, scientific, and technological sectors. Each is guided by a vision to make philanthropy a catalyst for new systems rooted in relationship, reciprocity, and care—demonstrating what is possible when communities and ideas come together.”

Q: What exciting plans and goals do you have for the next few years?

“Looking ahead, our focus is on integration, aligning sustainability, iterative collaboration, and storytelling into one continuous ecosystem of impact.

We’re expanding our regenerative sourcing network, investing in biodiversity research, and exploring new ways to measure both social and ecological wellbeing. Through the Foundation, we’ll continue to commission films and support creative collaborations that invite people to see the world – and ingredients – with new eyes.

Ultimately, our goal is simple at heart, yet far-reaching in impact: to demonstrate that business growth, planetary health, and human flourishing are not separate pursuits, but threads of the same story.”
