5 little ways to be friendlier to the Earth in 2022

5 stress-free ways to be more sustainable in 2022.

Now that January is in full swing and 2022 is well on its way, it’s a great time to start fresh and think about what you can do to make your life and the world just that little bit better. That doesn’t mean you need to try and end all the world’s problems, but just a few changes to your daily lifestyle can make a difference. It’s easier than you think. Here are our 5 little ways to be friendlier to the Earth in 2022.

These boots were made for walking

Your chosen method of transportation directly impacts your carbon footprint, maybe it’s time to dust off those walking boots (or trainers). Obviously you can’t walk everywhere, but for daily commutes such as going to and from work you could have a look around and see if you have any other options besides driving. If you can walk it, great! If not, consider whether it’s close enough to cycle. Not only are you reducing your carbon footprint, you’re also getting in some extra exercise (which could mean you don’t have to go to the gym as often and even save money).

If your workplace is too far, you could suggest a carpool with some of your co-workers, sharing the carbon footprint and helping you to get to know your colleagues better.

Food, glorious food

There’s no denying food is delicious; unfortunately, this can lead to making too much and perfectly good food going to waste. There are lots of easy ways to get around this: First, make it a habit to plan ahead. Consider how many people you’ll be cooking for and their portion size preferences, and measure out the ingredients appropriately, hopefully this will reduce the amount of food left over.

If your portion estimates are off and there is food left over, no worries! Freeze it for another time or look into how to otherwise preserve it. You can also compost plant leftovers. It’s always a good idea to buy food from local sources, such as a farm shop or market if possible, so you can reduce your carbon footprint from shipping and packaging.

The bargain store is open

Keeping up with the latest fashion trends can be a nightmare, but did you know it’s also highly unsustainable? The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global emissions and only 12% of the materials used gets recycled.  This year, think about whether you really need that hat or jacket before you buy it and trade designer clothes and fast fashion for second-hand.

You can find some real gems in charity shops if you take the time to look, plus your money goes to a good cause.  Selling or donating old clothes is another good way to pass on the sustainable attitude.

Rock down to electric avenue

Possibly one of the easiest things you can do to be more eco-friendly is switch to an energy provider that you know uses renewable energy. On top of this, you can make sure you’re using central heating and water sensibly.  For example, drying washing on a line or drying rack rather than using a dryer really helps reduce both your carbon footprint and your electricity bill.

There are many different ways to reduce your energy usage, it’s always good to research and find out your options. Then you can pick what’s best for you, even if it’s old chestnuts like remembering to turn off the lights.

What a wonderful world

Take advantage of your garden if you have one, or investigate local community projects. You could plant trees, flowers, berries, whatever you would like, to help nurture nature.  If you don’t have a green thumb you could try building birdhouses and insect homes and making bird feeders.  All of which are fun activities for kids while they’re home for the holidays, teaching them about nature at the same time.  Even if it’s just picking up litter, there are many ways you can help the environment.

No individual can wake up and discover a way to beat climate change in a single day, but everyone has something they can do to help out.  Start small in 2022 and who knows? Maybe you’ll discover a passion for protecting the planet that could be with you for a lifetime.
