Partnership launched to cut energy usage in research labs

A new partnership has been launched within the life sciences industry to help reduce the energy consumption of laboratory equipment.

The partnership between My Green Lab, a California-based life sciences nonprofit, and asset intelligence platform WattIQ, is thought to have particular applicable for large-scale research scenarios, where up to hundreds of assets can be in use at any one time.

Whereas power management currently requires laboratory teams to invest significant time into equipment monitoring, the technology from WattIQ monitors the utilisation and health of electrical equipment, letting administrators know when efficiency is falling.

Equipped with the intelligent technology enables laboratories to take more specific action to reduce their energy consumption, such as powering down high-energy equipment when not in use, and scheduling maintenance to a piece of equipment before it becomes critical to extend its useful life.

“On an average, about 22% of the energy consumption in labs is attributed to plug load,” said James Connelly, Chief Executive Officer of My Green Lab. “WattIQ’s technology provides much-needed transparency on the energy consumption of lab equipment, which is a major driver of energy consumption.

“We are excited that WattIQ have become a partner of My Green Lab and believe their solution will be critical to driving down energy consumption and operating a sustainable lab.”
