Nestled in the serene landscapes of Somerset, Teals Farm Shop goes beyond the ordinary. It stands out by prioritising sustainability and eco-friendly practices, evident in every aspect of its operation. From the construction of the building to waste management, Teals has implemented a range of initiatives to promote environmental conservation and reduce its carbon footprint.
The founders, Ash and Nick Sinfield, understand the importance of community and believe in the power of connection. They aimed to create more than just a place to buy fresh, locally sourced produce; they wanted to establish a hub where people could meet and nourish their bodies and relationships. Teals focuses on fostering connections between local producers, the people of Somerset, and passing visitors to create a thriving and interconnected community.
At the core of Ash and Nick’s philosophy is the idea that Teals serves as a platform for local producers to shine. By bridging the gap between producers and consumers, the store cultivates a shared pride and appreciation for the region’s rich agricultural heritage. Customers have the opportunity to meet the faces behind the produce, hear their stories, and gain a deeper understanding of the passion and dedication that goes into each product. By sourcing from nearby farms, dairies, and artisanal makers, Teals ensures access to the freshest and finest ingredients from Somerset, benefiting both customers and the local economy while reducing environmental impact.
In addition to offering high-quality local produce, Teals serves as a community hub, bringing people together through various activities and classes. The store provides pilates classes and boot camps, enabling individuals to improve their fitness levels while forging connections with like-minded community members. These activities not only promote physical well-being but also foster a sense of camaraderie and support among participants, leading to meaningful local connections.
One of the distinctive aspects of Teals is its focus on green initiatives, which are central to its business ethos. The energy-efficient design of the building showcases the store’s commitment to utilising resources sustainably. Despite its spacious open-plan layout with high ceilings, insulation plays a vital role in minimising heat loss during colder months and maintaining a cool interior during warmer periods.
Teals has completely eliminated the use of gas on-site, relying solely on electricity. The electricity is sourced from renewable sources, including solar panels, ensuring a greener energy supply. Additionally, the store’s installation of an external condensing kit enables efficient heating and cooling, minimising energy consumption.
During the building process, any trees felled on the premises are repurposed and used in the wood burner, providing a renewable source of heat. This practice reduces waste and reliance on external heating sources. Furthermore, all soil generated on-site is repurposed for landscaping, flower beds, and planting areas, promoting biodiversity by attracting pollinators and adhering to a circular economy approach.

Aligned with its dedication to waste reduction, Teals has implemented initiatives to reuse and recycle. The kitchen features a wood oven, reducing electricity requirements while imparting a distinct flavour to the restaurant’s culinary creations. Waste generated on-site is meticulously separated and either recycled or reused, and efforts are underway to compost all packaging and food waste on-site. By doing so, Teals minimises landfill waste and utilises it as a valuable resource to improve soil health.
Teals’ commitment to waste management extends to its prepared food waste. Leftovers, such as filled rolls, are donated to the local homeless charity “Help for Homeless,” which organises nightly deliveries to surrounding areas, benefiting those in need.
Looking ahead, Teals has exciting plans to expand its sustainability initiatives. The next phase involves installing a composter on-site to manage waste more efficiently and generate nutrient-rich compost for their own use.
Strategically located along the A303, Teals serves as a convenient rest stop for motorists traveling through Somerset. This summer, the installation of 10 Electric Vehicle (EV) superchargers will enhance the convenience of long-distance travel for travelers. These high-powered chargers provide efficient recharging, reducing range anxiety and ensuring drivers can reach their destinations comfortably, fostering confidence and reliability for EV drivers. This development also positions Teals as an attractive location to recharge both cars and bodies.
Teals exemplifies how businesses can incorporate core values of caring for people and the planet while maintaining quality and profitability. Through a wide range of initiatives, from energy-efficient building practices to innovative waste management strategies and community-building efforts, Teals paves the way towards a greener and more sustainable future.
