Solar roof system striving to “transform the solar industry”

A U.S. company has launched a new solar roof system designed to easily integrate new technology with traditional roofing materials and processes.

The Timberline Solar system, launched by GAF Energy in California, incorporates a “solar shingle” that can be nailed down in the same way as normal roofing shingle.

The Timberline Energy Shingle will be assembled locally at the GAF Energy manufacturing facility in San Jose, California.

GAF Energy’s sister company, known simply as GAF, installs over one million roofs on homes in the U.S. annually.

By making use of GAF’s national network of clients and partners, GAF Energy plans to use solar roofing to bring residential solar power to the mass market.

“Solar roofs are the future of clean energy, and Timberline Solar is the game-changing innovation that will get us there,” said Martin DeBono, President of GAF Energy.

“At GAF Energy, we have the capacity to scale this technology like no one else through GAF, bringing an integrated solar product that is weatherproof, affordable, and design-minded to homeowners across the country.

“We’re excited to lead the next generation of clean energy adoption.”

In September 2021, the Timberline Solar range achieved 7103 certification from UL, which categorizes the system as being safe to install on residential roofs, as both a roofing product and a solar product. This makes it the first of its kind, according to GAF Energy.

Additionally, the company worked with the U.S. Department of Energy’s research and development laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, to verify the product’s strength and durability.

“Realizing our vision of a breakthrough mass-market solar roof has been our mission since we launched GAF Energy in 2019. What the team has accomplished is nothing short of extraordinary,” said David Winter and David Millstone, Co-CEOs of Standard Industries.

“Through our national roofing network, world-class talent, and aggressive investment in research and development, the Standard family of companies will transform the solar industry.”
