Milford Haven Hosts Key Investor Delegation for Celtic Freeport Development
The Port of Milford Haven recently welcomed an international investor delegation as part of its growing involvement in the Celtic Freeport initiative, a transformative green energy proposition designed to unlock South Wales’ renewable energy potential. The two-day visit, held from September 30 to October 1, marked a crucial step toward fostering global investment and regional economic growth.
Showcasing Green Energy Potential
The delegation explored the expansive Port of Milford Haven estate, the UK’s largest energy port, emphasizing its pivotal role in advancing renewable energy projects. These include alternative fuels, floating offshore wind, CO2 storage, micro-grid development, and battery technology.
Tom Sawyer, Chief Executive at the Port of Milford Haven, highlighted the port’s strategic capabilities:
“We were delighted to host delegates at the Port of Milford Haven to showcase the extensive opportunities that exist across the port, our waterway communities, and the wider county. As the UK’s leading energy port, we have a unique proposition that integrates current energy facilities with developers of new technologies.”
Investor Engagement and Collaborative Vision
The Celtic Freeport initiative unites key industry players and local authorities, including Pembrokeshire County Council, RWE, Dragon LNG, and other corporate partners. The visiting delegation featured representatives from energy and infrastructure companies such as Naked Energy, Castlepines, Quinbrook, and GE Capital.

Luciana Ciubotariu, CEO of the Celtic Freeport, underscored the initiative’s potential:
“This visit is the start of our investor journey. The interest in our green energy and alternative fuels market proposition continues to grow, and this international delegation can see the business opportunities.”
The Freeport’s fiscal incentives and skills development programs further enhance its appeal, promising mutually beneficial community outcomes and long-term sustainable development.
Strategic Importance in the Green Energy Landscape
Positioned as a critical player in the UK’s renewable energy strategy, the Celtic Freeport initiative aligns with national goals for carbon reduction and clean energy innovation. The region’s natural deep-water harbors, existing energy infrastructure, and government-backed incentives create a compelling environment for large-scale investment.
The Port of Milford Haven’s vision of integrating traditional energy operations with cutting-edge renewable projects supports both the decarbonization of existing industries and the development of emerging technologies. This integrated approach ensures that the port remains a central energy hub while contributing to the UK’s broader sustainability goals.
Looking Ahead
As the Celtic Freeport initiative prepares to become operational later this year, the momentum gained from this investor visit signals a promising future. With international interest growing and a strong coalition of stakeholders in place, the project is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the UK’s renewable energy sector.
The successful completion of this visit marks a key milestone in the ongoing efforts to position South Wales as a leader in green energy development, fostering economic resilience while advancing global sustainability objectives.
