Q&A with John O’Dwyer, Associate Director – Environmental Sustainability, Powerday

What are the biggest waste management and recycling challenges currently facing London and the UK?

Firstly, this is a crucial question as we are seeing multifaceted challenges across the value chain, especially in a densely populated environment like London, where we operate.  In 2024, the UK construction industry produced around 100 million tonnes of construction waste and whilst the vast majority of this is recovered, only a third is recycled, and a very small percentage is reused.  Ultimately, these challenges show the huge amount of opportunity that industry partners have to make a difference.

At the start of the loop, the fundamental issue lies in how materials are designed. Material passports that provide a detailed digital record of material components will help facilitate deconstruction instead of demolition through design for disassembly and the ability to select lower impact materials. A significant volume of materials currently being removed from buildings, particularly across the construction and demolition industry, were not produced with end-of-life, recovery, or recyclability in mind. This design gap, combined with increasingly stringent commercial and legislative targets, such as the UK’s commitment to higher recycling rates, places an immense amount of pressure on the entire waste management industry to find solutions for materials that are unfit for a circular economy. Granted, materials are now being produced and deployed widely but the waste management supply chain won’t see the full force of their benefits or streamlined processes for a while longer. For now, we need to be looking closely at how we can divert these from landfill.

Secondly and specific to cities, limited space for on-site separation of materials represents a massive logistical hurdle. In a city where space comes with a high price tag, allocating dedicated areas for comprehensive waste sorting at source is often impractical and viewed as a sunk cost for project leads. This presents a significant challenge in implementing effective closed-loop schemes for certain high-value materials, as mixed waste streams are inherently more difficult and costly to process into high-quality secondary raw materials at Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs).

Thirdly, when we look at performance even at a household recycling level, London’s recycling rate of around 34% lags behind the national UK average of 43%. This disparity highlights a definite need to significantly increase closed-loop recycling capabilities across the capital. Our collective industry goal must be to decrease reliance on energy from waste (EfW) as a primary disposal method for recyclable materials and instead prioritise true material recovery and reuse.

Lastly, and perhaps a less obvious challenge, is the optimisation of inert construction waste. A substantial amount of construction waste is viewed as only having one use – materials like concrete and brick sit at the top of this list. While often seen as only having a singular purpose, we need to be much more ambitious in seeking beneficial secondary uses for these materials. This could include incorporating it into large-scale civil engineering projects like land reclamation or coastal defences, rather than just downcycling it. This presents a huge opportunity for innovative thinking and collaboration across industries.

On a positive note, The London Plan is beginning to drive real change across material lifecycles. This plan now requires developers and house builders to produce circular economy statements as part of the planning process. This is a vital step, providing much-needed clarity on end-of-life options for materials and establishing clear steps to minimise construction waste from the outset, embedding circularity into the planning stage.

How is Powerday using technology and innovation to achieve 100% landfill diversion?

Central to our approach is our investment in three state-of-the-art waste processing facilities. These are designed to efficiently remove as much recyclable material as possible from mixed waste streams. We partner with recycling equipment engineering specialist, Turmec, to ensure we have the most effective machinery. This includes advanced optical sorters and continuous hardware and software updates to equipment, such as electromagnets and trommels, crucial for improving throughput and increasing the purity of our recycled outputs.

Beyond material processing, a key part of our strategy involves working closely with clients across our value chain to progress closed-loop recycling options. This ensures materials are returned to their original purpose or a high-value alternative. For instance, we have an agreement with Protec to recycle plastic protection sheeting (Proplex and Correx) back into new products in Sheffield. We collaborate with PDA Plastics in Kent, who process uPVC from old windows and doors for onward recycling into new items. For window glass, we collect and crush it for recycling by Saint-Gobain in East Yorkshire, allowing new windows to contain up to 30% recycled materials. Additionally, for wood, we work with Egger for recycling and repurposing initiatives. 

Furthermore, even when hard-to-recycle materials go to EfW plants, we increasingly send them to onshore UK facilities rather than overseas. This reduces transport emissions and supports our own country’s infrastructure. For example, we’ve seen innovative approaches like Indaver’s EfW facility in Rivenhall, which repurposes waste heat and CO2 to grow approximately 30,000 tomatoes annually in an adjacent greenhouse.

How has Powerday’s sustained growth supported both environmental goals and community initiatives?

We operate under five strategic sustainability pillars embedded as a “golden thread” across our business. These pillars benchmark our success for clients, employees, the community, and the environment, ensuring that as we grow, our positive impact expands.

Our commitment to the local community is evident through The Powerday Foundation. We established this initiative specifically to help young Londoners develop their potential through sport. We work closely with a number of local sports organisations, schools, and community groups across the capital. Through these partnerships, the Foundation provides essential opportunities and support to disadvantaged children and young people. We use sport as a direct means to help them build important skills, boost confidence, and strengthen community ties.

With eight sites across London and the capacity to process over 3.5 million tonnes of waste annually, how does Powerday ensure efficiency and compliance across such a large-scale operation?

With our city-wide reach and large handling capabilities, managing logistics at Powerday demands a highly systematic approach to efficiency and compliance.

Firstly, dedicated, experienced site managers are permanently based at each location. They’re our eyes and ears on the ground, ensuring daily operations meet strict standards. This is reinforced through regular SHEQ (Safety, Health, Environment, Quality) audits across all sites, where our operations and SHEQ teams work hand-in-hand to ensure full legislative compliance and adherence to best practices.

We also maintain strong relationships with regulatory officers for all our sites and regularly welcome stakeholder visits and tours We invest significantly in continuous staff training, keeping our teams up to date with the latest techniques and standards from the regulatory teams that work with us.

Finally, an integrated management system is the engine of our entire operation, streamlining processes and ensuring all legal and environmental standards are consistently met. We also conduct regular reviews of all site plans to apply the best available techniques, constantly refining our methods for increased environmental performance and operational efficiency.

Can you share a case study or success story that illustrates Powerday’s positive impact on sustainability?

Our work with Countryside Partnerships on the Peel Estate development in Kilburn, North-West London demonstrates what sustainable construction looks like in practice.

This ambitious project aims to revitalise an underused area, blending over 300 mixed-use homes with green spaces and community amenities for sustainable living. Countryside Partnerships is committed to sustainable design, incorporating energy-efficient homes, eco-friendly materials, and features like solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and green roofs to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the development. 

Powerday’s role was to provide comprehensive waste management solutions throughout the project’s various phases, including skips and COSHH bin collections. We worked closely with Countryside Partnerships to manage their waste sustainably. A clear indicator of our joint success is Phase 4 of the project: from 32.65 tonnes of material collected, we achieved an impressive 87.02% recycling rate, with the remaining 12.98% used for energy recovery. This means 100% of the waste from Phase 4 was successfully diverted from landfill.

This project truly embodied how strategic partnerships can transform urban spaces into sustainable communities while achieving significant environmental outcomes.

What trends or innovations in waste management should businesses watch for in the next 5 -10 years?

The biggest game-changer we anticipate is the widespread adoption of AI and robotic sorting. Imagine MRFs equipped with AI-powered robotic arms that can support workers to identify and sort waste significantly faster and more accurately. This has the potential to dramatically improve facility throughput and the purity of sorted materials. While the theory sounds great, the key challenge will be scaling this technology effectively across diverse waste streams. We are actively monitoring and exploring its real-world application to see where it’s appropriate to deploy technology like this.

Chemical recycling, particularly for plastics, is another area generating considerable interest. This technology breaks down plastics into their basic chemical components, allowing them to be remanufactured into new plastics, rather than just downcycled. This offers a potential solution for hard-to-recycle plastics that currently have limited mechanical recycling options.

Beyond just sorting, we expect a significant increase in circular economy opportunities and the growth of manufacturer take-back schemes. As businesses recognise the value of their materials and the importance of resource responsibility, more will implement systems to reclaim their products at end-of-life. This requires a deeper integration of waste management into product design and supply chains.

We’re also watching various plastic innovations designed to lessen environmental impacts. This includes the development of more truly biodegradable plastics that decompose much faster and safer in natural environments, addressing the issue of plastic pollution. Furthermore, processes like pyrolysis, which converts plastics into useful fuels and raw components, could create new value from plastic waste streams that are currently difficult to manage.

These trends collectively point towards a future where waste is increasingly viewed as a valuable resource, driven by smart technology and a deeper commitment to circularity across all industries.
