Antalis Packaging is giving customers access to Life Cycle Assessment data and analysis to support packaging decisions across materials, markets and supply chains. Using Sphera’s LCA software and environmental database, the company can compare packaging solutions over their complete lifecycle. The resource includes more than 20,000 full LCA datasets spanning 80 countries and over 60 industries. Antalis Packaging aims to give businesses evidence they can assess alongside their own operational priorities, rather than prescribe a single preferred material or format.

Evidence For Packaging Decisions

Packaging choices often involve competing requirements around product protection, cost, transport, customer expectations and environmental impact. Antalis Packaging’s approach is designed to give customers a consistent basis for comparing options, using data that covers different materials, industries and geographical markets.

The service does not determine which option a customer should select. Instead, it provides information on the potential environmental impact of alternatives, allowing businesses to weigh the findings against their own applications, supply chains and requirements.

John Garner, Packaging Category Director at Antalis Packaging, said:

“Customers are increasingly asking us how they can make better packaging choices, but there is no one-size-fits-all answer,”

“What is right for one application may not be right for another. Our role is to provide the evidence that allows customers to understand the differences and make an informed choice.”

Assessing The Full Lifecycle

The assessment extends beyond the material used in a product. Antalis can examine existing packaging across stages including design, raw materials, manufacturing, transport, use, recycling and end of life. This gives businesses a clearer view of where environmental impacts arise and where changes may offer an opportunity for improvement.

The comparison between polypropylene tape and paper tape illustrates why material assumptions alone may not give a complete answer. A paper alternative may be perceived as the more sustainable option, yet an LCA considers materials, manufacturing, transportation and end-of-life factors before presenting a comparison.

That process can help organisations move from broad material preferences to choices grounded in the circumstances of a particular packaging application. It also recognises that the most suitable option can differ between products, routes to market and disposal arrangements.

Global Data For Comparison

Sphera’s LCA solution gives Antalis access to a substantial environmental knowledge base, including more than 20,000 full LCA datasets. The data covers 80 countries and more than 60 industries, alongside emissions data and industry-specific information.

According to Antalis, the datasets are supported by quality assurance, third-party review and verification, strict modelling principles and ongoing maintenance. This gives the company another tool within its design-led packaging work, combining practical packaging knowledge with environmental data.

For customers operating across different sectors or markets, access to comparable data can be particularly useful when reviewing alternatives. It allows packaging decisions to be considered using information that accounts for lifecycle stages rather than only the visible characteristics of a material.

Balancing Business Requirements

Retailers, aerospace businesses, automotive companies, logistics operators and brands are among the customer groups Antalis is working with as packaging decisions become more detailed. Businesses must consider legislation, customer expectations, cost, performance and sustainability at the same time.

John Garner, Packaging Category Director at Antalis Packaging, said:

“We are already working with leading retailers, aerospace, automotive, logistics companies and brands as decisions are becoming increasingly complex,”

“Businesses are balancing legislation, customer expectations, cost, performance and sustainability. By providing data, we can help customers understand the potential impact of different choices and give them the information they need to make decisions with confidence.”

Supporting Better Informed Choices

Pressure to reduce packaging waste and environmental impact makes reliable assessment increasingly useful for businesses reviewing established formats or considering new materials. Antalis Packaging’s LCA capability provides a structured route for examining an existing solution, comparing alternatives or reviewing a product’s full lifecycle.

John Garner, Packaging Category Director at Antalis Packaging, said:

“Whether assessing an existing solution, comparing alternative materials, or looking at a product’s full lifecycle, Antalis Packaging is working collaboratively with customers to provide the data and expertise to help understand options and identify opportunities for improvement”

By putting detailed lifecycle information alongside packaging expertise, Antalis is helping customers make decisions based on the realities of each application. The approach offers a practical basis for evaluating options where no single material or packaging format can answer every requirement.
