Hive Broadens Smart Home Energy Platform

Hive has partnered with energy technology company Enode to make its smart home platform compatible with hundreds of additional eco-tech products. The expansion of the Works with Hive programme will initially cover electric vehicles and EV chargers, before moving to solar panels and home batteries. It is intended to give households one place to monitor and manage devices from different manufacturers, reducing the need to move between separate apps. The development supports practical home energy decisions, including charging an EV during cheaper off-peak periods and using solar power held in a home battery.

One App For Home Energy

The new integration widens the range of products that can connect to the Hive app. As more households add technologies such as EV chargers, solar panels and batteries, compatibility between devices can determine how easily those assets can be managed together.

Bringing different products into a single platform can help users see how their home energy equipment is operating and make changes based on their own needs. Hive’s rollout will start with electric vehicles and charging equipment, creating a route for more connected services as further product categories are added.

The partnership also reflects the increasing variety of energy technologies available to households. Rather than treating heating, vehicle charging, solar generation and battery storage as isolated systems, the Works with Hive programme is being extended to support a more coordinated approach.

Greater Choice And Control

For customers, the central benefit is the ability to use compatible technologies from a wider range of manufacturers through the same smart home platform. This could make it easier to schedule electricity use around lower-cost periods or match demand with electricity generated on site.

Tom Pakenham, Commercial Director at Hive, said:

“Our goal is to make home energy simpler, smarter and more rewarding for our customers. As more people install EV chargers, solar panels and home batteries, they want those technologies to work seamlessly together and help them save money.

Tom Pakenham, Commercial Director at Hive, said:

“Expanding Works with Hive through our partnership with Enode will give customers more choice and control, while helping them get even more value from the energy technologies in their homes. It is another step towards making low-carbon homes energy easier to manage.”

Hive is part of the Centrica family and is using the partnership to extend its connected energy offer. The company expects the work to support additional British Gas smart energy tariffs and future home energy optimisation services across the group.

Platform Supports New Technologies

The integration is powered by Enode’s Energy Orchestration Platform. This gives Hive a way to onboard new brands and product categories as the home energy technology market develops.

That flexibility matters as connected devices become more common in homes. EV charging, solar panels and storage batteries each operate differently, yet can all affect when a household buys, stores or uses electricity. A platform that can bring those products together may make it easier for households to respond to electricity prices and their own energy generation.

Henrik Langeland, CEO at Enode, said:

“The future of home energy is connected. We’re excited to partner with Hive as it builds an ecosystem capable of supporting a growing range of technologies and manufacturers.

Henrik Langeland, CEO at Enode, said:

“By bringing these products into a coordinated system, we can help create smarter homes that respond more effectively to how energy is generated, priced and used.”

Supporting A Flexible Grid

The implications extend beyond individual homes. When connected devices can draw electricity at times when it is cheaper and grid demand is lower, they can help reduce pressure during peak periods. This is particularly relevant for charging equipment and batteries, where the timing of electricity use can often be adjusted.

Hive and Enode’s partnership is designed to lay foundations for this more flexible energy system. By adding hundreds of third-party eco-tech products to the Works with Hive programme, the companies are creating a broader connected home platform that can support household choice while helping electricity use better reflect how power is generated, priced and consumed.

As the rollout progresses from EVs and chargers to solar panels and home batteries, the partnership offers a practical route for households to bring more of their low-carbon technology into one managed system. The result is a clearer proposition for customers seeking to use less energy, save money and make greater use of the equipment already installed in their homes.
