Sustainable Aviation Takes Off
The aviation industry took a bold step toward reducing carbon emissions with Wizz Air’s recent trials using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Conducted in collaboration with Airbus and Charleroi Airport, this initiative highlights the crucial role SAF will play as the European Union’s Refuel EU legislation comes into effect in 2025, mandating minimum SAF use for all flights departing EU airports.
Wizz Air’s operational trial included over 50 flights powered by a SAF blend under the mass balancing model. SAF is a game-changer, capable of reducing lifecycle carbon emissions by up to 90% compared to traditional kerosene. The trial not only demonstrated SAF’s feasibility in regular operations but also revealed the challenges of cost and infrastructure that need to be addressed for large-scale adoption.

Passenger Perspectives on Sustainable Travel
Central to Wizz Air’s initiative was a survey assessing passenger awareness of SAF and attitudes toward sustainable travel.
Key findings include:
- Awareness Gaps: 74% of respondents were unaware of the SAF mandate beginning January 2025, underscoring the need for improved communication about sustainability efforts.
- Environmental Trade-offs: While 58% were willing to modify travel habits for environmental reasons, only 36% were prepared to pay extra for lower-emission flights.
- Demand for Government Action: 72% called for increased public investment to scale SAF production.
“These insights highlight the importance of passenger engagement in advancing sustainable aviation,” said Yvonne Moynihan, Corporate & ESG Officer at Wizz Air. “Educating passengers on SAF’s role in decarbonization is essential as we transition to greener aviation.”
SAF in Action: Collaborative Efforts
The trial also sparked dialogue among industry leaders at a roundtable hosted by Charleroi Airport. The event brought together six experts to discuss SAF adoption, passenger awareness, and policy action.
Julien Manhes, Head of SAF and Carbon Dioxide Removal at Airbus, emphasized the need for a unified effort:
“Today, SAF is available in small quantities. We need to increase demand, supply, and affordability. Collaboration across the aviation ecosystem—including airlines, airports, regulators, and fuel producers—is crucial.”
Moeve’s Director of Sustainable Aviation, Álvaro Macarro, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing affordability as a barrier:
“While passengers increasingly consider environmental trade-offs, the cost remains a significant hurdle. Public-private partnerships are vital to bridge the gap between current capabilities and future demand.”
Charleroi Airport is taking a proactive role by collaborating with the Walloon Government on a local SAF production unit. This initiative will go beyond EU mandates to exceed SAF requirements, demonstrating regional leadership in sustainable aviation.

While Wizz Air’s trial demonstrates SAF’s potential, scaling it requires addressing cost challenges and increasing production capacity. Airbus, Moeve, and Charleroi Airport are committed to accelerating SAF adoption through innovation and infrastructure development.
For Wizz Air, sustainability is embedded in its operations. With a modern Airbus fleet, the airline boasts the lowest emissions per passenger per kilometer globally. Moynihan emphasized the importance of policy support:
