Revive Eco Scales Coffee Waste Innovation

Revive Eco Secures Major Contract for Coffee Waste Upcycling

Scottish sustainability start-up Revive Eco has secured a landmark commercial contract with French biotech firm SAS Pivert to scale its patented coffee waste upcycling process to an industrial level. The partnership aims to transform used coffee grounds into a palm oil alternative for the cosmetics, cleaning, pharmaceutical, and food and drink industries.

A Green Business Milestone

Revive Eco’s innovative technology extracts natural oils from used coffee grounds, offering an eco-friendly substitute for palm oil—a key ingredient linked to deforestation and carbon emissions. With 500,000 tonnes of coffee waste generated annually in the UK alone, this innovation has the potential to reshape global supply chains while cutting waste management costs.

Fergus Moore, Co-Founder of Revive Eco, highlighted the environmental impact:

“We founded Revive Eco to create high-value ingredients from waste materials and support a sustainable future. Our patented technology can positively reshape how products in the beauty, food, and cleaning sectors are made.”

Accelerating Market Expansion

The contract with SAS Pivert will leverage surplus coffee grounds from Costa Coffee, scaling up production to meet growing market demand. The collaboration was celebrated at the UK Embassy in Paris, with support from the Scottish Government, EIT Food, and Scottish Development International (SDI).

Scott Kennedy, Co-Founder of Revive Eco, emphasized the strategic benefits:

“Working with SAS Pivert is a huge step toward our mission of turning waste into something valuable. Outsourcing production allows us to scale within existing manufacturing networks.”

Crowdfunding Success and Future Growth

Revive Eco has also extended its second crowdfunding round, raising over £200,000 from more than 90 investors, surpassing its initial target by 124%. With two weeks left, the company increased its funding goal to £300,000, enabling more investors to support its journey.

The natural cosmetics market alone is valued at £3.1 billion and growing rapidly. Surfactants made from sustainable sources, like Revive Eco’s coffee-based alternatives, are projected to reach £16.8 billion globally by 2027.

Industry Recognition and Support

The start-up’s progress has attracted significant industry attention. David Decrock, SDI Country Head – France, remarked:

“We are proud to support Revive Eco’s collaboration with SAS Pivert. Their innovation exemplifies how Scottish tech can drive sustainability through international partnerships.”

Marie Russier, Head of Entrepreneurship at EIT Food, added:

“Revive Eco’s success demonstrates how tech validation programs can fast-track groundbreaking innovations. Their progress in redefining waste inspires a more sustainable future.”

A Circular Economy Vision

Revive Eco’s approach aligns with global sustainability goals, including biodiversity protection and reduced reliance on palm and coconut oils. The company’s scalable model demonstrates how industrial partnerships can accelerate the transition toward a circular economy while fostering environmental and economic impact.
