An online zero waste supermarket, Good Club, has announced the opening of its Crowdcube fundraiser. The groceries and household staples delivery service, which operates via a carbon neutral courier and utilizes reusable packaging, has so far secured £700,580 and aims to reach £1 million. Good Club claims their green approach to groceries has cut carbon outputs, when compared to a typical e-commerce delivery service, by up to 80%.
Good Club points out that necessity drives their approach to sustainability: recycling rates in the UK have dropped as low as 14%, paper alternatives remain water intensive and require extensive logging. Instead, the company aims to circumnavigate such limitations by offering drop-offs and returns for their reusable containers and packaging, much like a milkman style delivery service.
“We’re proud that we can welcome our customers and members of the public to become investors in Good Club through our crowdfunding,” explains Ben Patten, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Good Club. “Since being founded in 2019, the Company has seen transformational growth of over 2000%, demonstrating consumers’ demand for zero waste and sustainable groceries.”
Good Club comments that even recyclable products are often exported to countries with less stringent recycling policies, meaning the very problem the process aims to mitigate is in fact exacerbated. As such, the company now aims to expand their zero waste product range from 150 to 500 within the next six months.
“Through the additional funds raised, Good Club will expand its Zero Waste range and make its operations much more efficient, which brings a range of benefits,” says Mr. Patten “As well as changing our operational processes to improve delivery and customer service, which improves financial performance, the funding will also give us the ability to innovate our zero waste packaging, which helps with carbon and waste efficiency. By the end of this year, our new reusable box system will save 80% of the CO2 on a typical grocery order.”
