Turning Waste into Renewable Energy in Cádiz

Bioreciclaje de Cádiz, Enagás Renovable and Waga Energy partner to build new RNG facility in Andalusia

A new renewable natural gas (RNG) production facility is set to transform waste into clean energy in southern Spain. Bioreciclaje de Cádiz, a public-private consortium, and Enagás Renovable have partnered with Waga Energy to develop an RNG project at the Medina Sidonia Landfill in the province of Cádiz, Andalusia. Scheduled for commissioning in 2027, the facility will recover landfill gas and convert it into renewable energy for local communities.

The project will produce up to 273,000 MMBtu (80 GWh) of RNG annually, equivalent to the energy consumption of 16,000 Spanish households or a fleet of 185 liquefied natural gas-powered trucks. By replacing fossil fuels with renewable gas, the facility will prevent approximately 21,000 metric tons of CO₂ emissions each year, reinforcing the region’s pathway toward carbon neutrality.

A circular economy model for waste management

Bioreciclaje de Cádiz — owned by Valoriza Servicios Medioambientales, GS Inima, and the Consortium for Urban Waste Management in the Province of Cádiz — manages the Miramundo – Los Hardales Environmental Complex, which treats and disposes of solid waste from 34 municipalities. Together with Enagás Renovable, a leader in renewable gas development, the consortium will handle the grid injection and commercialisation of the RNG produced.

Under the agreement, Waga Energy will design, build and operate a gas purification unit using its patented WAGABOX® technology, which captures and upgrades landfill gas into pipeline-quality renewable gas. The company will operate the unit until 2038, supplying upgraded gas to Bioreciclaje de Cádiz and Enagás Renovable for injection into Spain’s gas grid.

This collaboration marks Waga Energy’s second project in Spain, following its first near Barcelona, and reflects the growing role of landfill-to-energy projects in Europe’s renewable energy mix.

Driving the energy transition

Advancing Spain’s renewable gas capacity

The project supports Spain’s efforts to scale up renewable gas infrastructure in line with Paris Agreement goals and EU circular economy policies. RNG derived from waste plays a critical role in decarbonising sectors where electrification remains difficult, such as heavy transport and industrial heating.

Approved in July by the Consortium for Urban Waste Management in the Province of Cádiz, the project demonstrates how regional cooperation and public-private partnerships can accelerate the shift to low-carbon energy systems.

Once operational in 2027, the Medina Sidonia facility will not only reduce emissions but also turn waste management sites into local energy producers — creating a tangible example of how circular economy principles can power Spain’s energy transition.
