World’s first agri-focused satellite launches from Cape Canaveral

The new year commenced on a great note for the aerospace engineering and agricultural industry,

, as EOS SAT-1, the first imaging satellite to be built by Dragonfly Aerospace, lifted off successfully from Space X’s launch site in Cape Canaveral, Florida. 

As a part of the Transport-6 mission, the satellite is set to revolutionise the industry with its path breaking technology. The satellite, which launched on Tuesday 3rd January 2023, is the first of a seven-satellite constellation in low Earth orbit for customer EOSDA (EOS Data Analytics). Throughout the span of next three years, the remaining six satellites are scheduled to be launched and take their respective places in the low Earth orbit. The launch of the satellite, designed and built by South African based aerospace engineering company ‘Dragonfly Aerospace, comes as a momentous occasion for the country as it is the first micro satellite to be manufactured in South Africa since 2009. 

As nations struggled to combat climate change throughout 2022, the satellite will play a pivotal role in sharing valuable information to maintain biodiversity.  It would also bring in ecological benefits as the insights would help to prevent natural habitats being diminished for crop growth. The sophisticated technology of EOS SAT-1 makes it one of the most efficient and advanced imaging satellites in LEO. It is equipped with two Dragon Eye electro-optical imagers and will provide images 44km swath panchromatic and multispectral imagery across 11 spectral bands at close to 1m resolution.

Talking about the successful launch of the satellite,

an elated Bryan Dean, CEO, and co-founder of Dragonfly Aerospace shares, “The experience of the launch was a breath-taking one. Initially as the rocket fired, I was very excited. But soon, the excitement turned into anxiety as it soared higher into the sky, and I was holding my breath hoping that it kept going. As the satellite reached the orbit, we took a sigh of relief and rejoiced with a wave of celebration. However, we were still at the edge of our seats waiting anxiously for the satellite to separate. As our satellite was the last to separate, my anxiety lasted for a long time. Finally, as it separated it was a beautiful and memorable sight for me and my team members. It was an emotional moment for everyone as we persuaded this goal from the inception of our company.

While we previously done it with our cameras, the satellite is a testimony of our efficiency in providing full imaging systems.
