Educational Growth Empowers Stonewater Customers in Sustainability

A Practical Approach to Sustainable Living and Careers

Stonewater, one of the UK’s leading housing providers, is offering its customers a unique opportunity for educational growth, helping them deepen their understanding of sustainability while exploring career prospects in the sector. Through its Sustainable Futures programme, Stonewater is equipping participants with essential knowledge on topics such as energy efficiency, emissions reduction, fuel poverty, and EPC ratings.

This free training initiative comprises eight online sessions spread over a year, allowing customers to develop a strong foundation in sustainability. More than just an educational course, Sustainable Futures also serves as a bridge to potential employment opportunities, encouraging participants to consider careers in the sustainability and construction sectors.

Educational Growth Through Customer Perspectives

Carl Jerromes, a Stonewater customer from Warwickshire and a participant in the programme, shared his motivation for joining the initiative.

“I received an email saying that Stonewater was launching a new sustainability course for customers. I began focusing on environmental issues in the workplace while I was working for a global bank in the early 2000s before moving to a role that was helping educate adults on sustainability. Since 2019, I’ve been leading research on how different organisations deal with climate change and the Stonewater programme seemed to mirror my work, so it was natural for me to get involved.”

His enthusiasm for sustainability aligns with the programme’s objectives, and he highlights its value in broadening perspectives on environmental issues in housing.

“Because of the research I’m doing, I understand the urgent need for living more sustainably. However, the programme has helped me learn about the need for environmentally mindful housing developments and why this must be considered when retrofitting homes in particular. I’ve also discovered how essential it is to boost recruitment in the construction industry and what the skills gap will mean for the development of affordable housing across the UK.”

Sustainability from a Housing Perspective

Stonewater’s programme stands out because it presents sustainability from the viewpoint of a housing provider. Participants are encouraged to think about practical ways to reduce their carbon footprint within their own homes.

“It’s been interesting to learn about environmental efficiency from the point of view of a housing provider, especially in terms of what customers can do in their own homes to limit carbon emissions – this puts a different perspective on the issue in comparison to what I’ve learnt in my research projects.”

Beyond its environmental benefits, the programme fosters a sense of community among participants. Jerromes notes how the experience has provided valuable networking opportunities.

“As a Stonewater customer, it has also been a fantastic opportunity to meet fellow customers from across the country, as well as some of the Stonewater colleagues who aren’t members of the team I would typically be in contact with. It’s clear they are passionate about ensuring customers have the opportunity to learn more about sustainability practices and know a bit more about what Stonewater is doing behind the scenes.”

Educational Growth and Career Development

For those interested in sustainability careers, the programme offers more than just knowledge—it provides practical steps toward professional growth. Jerromes sees this as a major advantage of the initiative.

“From my time on the course so far, my knowledge and broader awareness have definitely developed. The things I’ve learnt have been of value and the support from Stonewater has been fantastic. When the email came through asking us if we wanted to sign up, it was a no-brainer for me, as it allowed me to continue to progress my professional development in the industry.”

A key highlight of the programme is the opportunity to connect with Stonewater’s Employability Coach, who provides guidance on career pathways in the sustainability and construction industries.

“I’m looking forward to being able to meet Stonewater’s Employability Coach at the end of the course to hear about the additional support she can offer for us to develop careers in the sector.”

Bridging the Skills Gap in Sustainable Housing

Stonewater’s Sustainable Futures programme is more than just a training initiative—it plays a vital role in addressing key industry challenges. The UK’s housing sector faces a growing demand for skilled professionals who can contribute to energy-efficient housing and sustainable development. By educating customers and encouraging them to explore careers in the field, Stonewater is actively working to close the skills gap and create a workforce capable of meeting sustainability targets.

The programme is part of Stonewater’s Greenoak Centre of Excellence, which focuses on pioneering sustainable housing solutions. Interested individuals can learn more about the initiative on Stonewater’s website.

By offering accessible sustainability education and career support, Stonewater is empowering its customers to make a tangible difference in their communities while also fostering future industry leaders. As sustainability continues to shape the housing sector, initiatives like Sustainable Futures demonstrate how forward-thinking organisations can create lasting, positive change.
