London’s Heathrow Airport could become a hub for flying taxis within the next few years.

Vertical Aerospace has announced a partnership to explore the possibilities of operating zero-emissions short-range air services from Heathrow by the mid-2020s, while minimising potential impact on the local area.

Vertical’s VA-X4 electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicle is capable of speeds of up to 200mph. It’s estimated that the flying taxi service would be capable of transporting four passengers to the City of London within just 12 minutes.

Vertical has previously announced a partnership with Virgin Atlantic to develop an eVTOL network in the UK, including conditional pre-orders on over 100 VA-X4 vehicles.

Stephen Fitzpatrick, CEO and Founder of Vertical, underlined the importance of the flying taxi service, as the UK looks to achieve its target of Net Zero by 2050.

“This announcement marks the start of an exciting relationship that will help make eVTOLs flying from Heathrow by the mid-2020s a reality,” said Mr. Fitzpatrick.
