Nationwide Platforms is redefining how the powered access sector approaches workplace mental health support. During Mental Health Awareness Week (11th-17th May), the UK equipment hire leader implemented its ‘One Small Thing’ initiative, engaging 750 employees across the country in practical wellbeing actions. The company-wide programme collected anonymous suggestions for supporting mental health, sharing five examples daily throughout the week to maximise impact across all business areas. This initiative addresses critical industry needs, with recent NHS data showing 2.21 million people were in contact with mental health services at the end of March 2026.
Anonymous Participation Drives Engagement
The ‘One Small Thing’ initiative encouraged employees to anonymously submit realistic actions they have taken to support their mental health. Suggestions ranged from taking proper breaks during the working day to getting fresh air between jobs and asking for help instead of struggling alone with difficult tasks. The programme also captured ways colleagues could support each other, including actively listening, recognising good work, and checking in on teammates’ wellbeing.
These contributions were systematically shared across the organisation, with five examples from different business areas emailed daily to all staff. Areas represented included IT, training, transport and depot operations, ensuring diverse perspectives from across the company’s operations. A digital bulletin board provided an additional platform for anonymous advice sharing, maximising the reach of helpful information.
Addressing Industry Mental Health Crisis
The initiative responds to alarming workplace mental health statistics. Mental Health UK’s Burnout Report reveals that one in five UK workers took time off due to stress during 2025, a figure that remained consistent with the previous year. This data underscores the persistent nature of workplace mental health challenges and the need for proactive employer intervention.
Karen Maguire, HR Director at Nationwide Platforms, said:
“With the UK amidst a mental health crisis, it’s imperative that activities such as ‘One Small Thing’ are implemented to not only raise awareness of the importance of support with mental health, but to equip employees with an arsenal of actionable changes they can use in their own lives to allow them to help themselves.”
Employer Responsibility in Mental Health Support
The programme reflects broader recognition of employer duties in supporting workforce wellbeing. Nationwide Platforms positioned the initiative as part of comprehensive mental health support, ensuring employees understand available options for additional help when needed. This approach acknowledges that workplace mental health requires both immediate practical actions and longer-term support systems.
Karen Maguire, HR Director at Nationwide Platforms, expressed:
“It’s an employer’s responsibility to do everything they can to support their team and ensure that they understand what options are available to them if they need further help.”
Sector Leadership in Workforce Wellbeing
The initiative positions Nationwide Platforms as a progressive employer within the construction and infrastructure support sector. Established in 1994, the company has grown to become the UK’s market leader in powered access hire equipment, supporting safe working at height across construction, infrastructure and specialist projects. By implementing structured mental health support programmes, the company demonstrates how traditional industrial sectors can prioritise employee wellbeing alongside operational excellence.
This project highlights how mental health awareness can be integrated into everyday workplace culture through simple, actionable steps. The anonymous format encourages participation whilst the systematic sharing approach ensures maximum benefit across diverse teams and locations.
