A surge in demand for decarbonisation solutions is driving significant expansion at iconsys, a leading control and automation specialist. The company, headquartered in Telford, is set to create 15 new jobs over the next year, boosting its workforce to 115 as it capitalizes on major opportunities in energy transition, marine and port automation, and heavy industry.

Expanding to Meet Growing Decarbonisation Needs
With nearly four decades of expertise in engineering integration, control systems, and automation solutions, iconsys is positioning itself as a key player in the UK’s decarbonisation efforts. The company is increasing its capacity to take advantage of multi-million-pound projects in carbon capture and storage, hydrogen production, and fuel switching.
Nick Darrall, Managing Director of iconsys, highlighted the company’s momentum:
“2024 was an exciting year for the business, with two new technical offices opening in Cheshire and Scotland to support our Telford base and give us greater geographical reach and access to new talent. This has given us the foundations to aggressively attack new opportunities that we believe will come to fruition this year, as an increasing number of companies – from pretty much every sector imaginable – begin or accelerate their decarbonisation plans.”
Engineering Expertise at the Forefront
As global and domestic governments push for energy transition, iconsys is leveraging its deep engineering knowledge and control systems expertise to provide essential solutions. The company is already involved in key projects, including designing and supplying an electrical control and instrumentation switch room, control system, and fire and gas detection system for the UK’s largest hydrogen mobility corridor project.
Darrall emphasized iconsys’ strategic advantage:
“I believe this is where we have a real advantage. There is significant Government backing, at home and overseas, to make energy transition a success and we have the elusive engineering, control systems and automation expertise to help EPCs, end users and sector specialists deliver their solutions. We’ve invested heavily in creating a dedicated team, with the recent high-profile hires of Steve Robinson and Joe Howe giving us two of the driving forces and most respected experts in this field.”
Transforming Marine and Port Industries
Another sector experiencing a significant shift is marine and port operations, which are rapidly evolving towards automation-driven smart ports. Iconsys is playing a pivotal role in these transformations, including the development of smart shore power systems, electrification of port equipment, and integration of offshore wind projects.
The company’s expertise extends throughout the entire asset lifecycle, ensuring optimal performance and compliance with stringent regulatory requirements. With a projected 15% revenue growth this year, iconsys is also expanding its offerings in digital solutions, cybersecurity, and safety services to support businesses navigating the complexities of smart infrastructure.
Pioneering Smart Infrastructure
Darrall further detailed the company’s long-term vision:
“It’s all about transitioning to smart infrastructure that is easier to maintain and future-proofed for decades to come. We’ve already completed £multi-million contracts in this industry. These range from development and delivery of the first UK-built Smart Shore Power system to contributing to the groundbreaking retrofitting of the Pacific Grebe cargo ship with a 20-metre wind sail. The latter has seen us design and select the advanced drivetrain for the wind sail’s moving axis, as well as installing the panel drive system to maximise efficiency and performance at sea.”
Integrating AI for the Future
Looking ahead, iconsys aims to enhance its solutions with artificial intelligence (AI). The company has launched an AI working group to integrate more AI tools into its operations, further optimizing efficiency for its customers in over 37 countries worldwide.
As industries accelerate their decarbonisation efforts, iconsys is positioning itself as a key technology partner in delivering sustainable and intelligent automation solutions. With its ongoing expansion and investment in innovation, the company is set to play a crucial role in shaping the future of clean energy and smart infrastructure.
