World’s first solar-powered biodigester

The solar-powered biodigester will help companies become more environmentally friendly.

The solar-powered biodigester will enable companies to become more environmentally conscious.

Power Knot LLC have announced a collaboration with the Dubai Creative Group and Microsoft Dubai to create a solar-powered biodigester.

The solar-powered biodigeste which incorporates off grid power solutions will be the first solar system of its kind in the world; Power Knot, the market leader for onsite organic waste management solutions, states that the move was initiated by the Microsoft Real Estate and Facilities Directorate (RE&F).

Biodigesters are an eco-friendly method of waste disposal: they break down organic materials such as food and animal manure, and are an effective way of reducing your carbon footprint.

The digestate (by-product of the biodigestion process) is used as a plant-organic fertilizer. The environmental benefits of a solar-powered biodigester will aid Microsoft’s aim to become carbon negative, water positive, and zero waste by 2030.

“By implementing the biodigester system here in our Dubai office, we’re able to process our food waste locally directly contributing to those three goals and making our office and ultimately the planet a more sustainable place to work,” said James Spearman, the UAE Sustainability Lead at Microsoft.

Indeed, biodigesters are a sustainable alternative to landfills, which are said to produce 11 percent of the world’s methane emissions, thus contributing to global warming.

In terms of waste disposal, Power Knot has ten different sizes of biodigester systems that digest from 20 lbs per day to 6600 lbs per day of food waste.

All LFC Biodigesters automatically connect to the LFC Cloud, a continuous data analytics system created by Power Knot. Through the LFC Cloud, the LFC Biodigesters will send data about the operation of the system from which users can create reports for stakeholders.

“We are committed to operate as efficiently as possible, and we are evolving to address our sustainability needs,” said Sharon McGrath Dawson, FM Country Lead – UA, Oman, and Qatar.
