A German electronics manufacturer has launched the world’s first washing machine to feature an in-built microfibre filter, designed to tackle microplastics pollution world-wide.
Grundig, part of the Arçelik group of companies, has launched its new FiberCatcher washing machine, designed to filters up to 90% of synthetic microfibers. The machine machine uses specialised FiberCatcher filter cartridges, constructed from 98% recycled plastic materials.
Research from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) revealed that plastic particles washing off from products including synthetic clothes and textiles potentially account for 35% of primary microplastics polluting oceans worldwide.
Teresa Arbuckle, Managing Director of Beko plc, a subsidiary of Arçelik, commented on the company’s missions to pioneer in new and innovative technology.
“Arçelik is committed to investing in sustainable technology; from using recycled fishing nets and recycled plastic bottles in our appliances, to launching our most innovative product to date to help with microplastic pollution,” said Ms. Arbuckle.
