Birmingham Airport Invites Students To Reimagine Air Rail Link

Birmingham Airport has partnered with WMG Academy Trust students to explore greener, more accessible and customer-focused options for its Air Rail Link. The project centres on the 585-metre connection between Birmingham International Station and the airport terminal, used by millions of passengers and staff each year. Students from the Solihull and Coventry-based academy developed proposals spanning renewable energy, rainwater-powered systems, sustainable construction and accessible mobility. The initiative supports BHX’s commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2033 while giving young people direct exposure to infrastructure, engineering and aviation careers.

A Transport Link Under Review

The Air Rail Link is a key interchange for people arriving at Birmingham International Station before continuing to the airport terminal. By putting the connection at the centre of an education challenge, BHX asked students to consider both its operational role and the passenger experience it provides.

Working in teams, participants were invited to rethink the existing system with an emphasis on sustainability, accessibility and customer needs. Their concepts were then presented to a judging panel of airport specialists, following a session with BHX chief executive Nick Barton on collaboration and fresh thinking.

The challenge brought practical relevance to the students’ work. Rather than considering sustainability as a standalone subject, teams were asked to apply it to an established piece of transport infrastructure with a clear role in the airport’s daily operations.

Ideas For Greener Travel

Proposals covered a broad range of potential interventions, from renewable energy generation and rainwater-powered solutions to mobility designs intended to improve access. Sustainable construction methods and ideas to enhance the passenger journey also featured in the presentations.

For the airport, the exercise sits within a wider programme of engagement with schools, colleges and education partners across the Midlands. That engagement is designed to help young people develop skills suited to the region’s economy, while offering employers an opportunity to hear emerging perspectives on infrastructure and environmental performance.

Industry Experience For Students

The winning team has been offered a two-week summer internship with BHX’s infrastructure team. The placement will give the students an opportunity to see the processes involved in turning ideas into operational projects, and to gain exposure to real-world asset management.

Such opportunities can be particularly valuable in sectors where major infrastructure assets, customer service requirements and carbon reduction ambitions must be considered together. The challenge also connected students with senior airport personnel, creating a forum for young people to pitch proposals in a professional setting.

BHX has set a target to become a net zero carbon operation by 2033. The student project provides a focused example of how that ambition can be linked to workforce development, encouraging learners to consider how design, engineering and infrastructure choices may contribute to lower-carbon airport operations.

The Air Rail Link challenge also recognises that transport connections are about more than movement between two points. Accessibility, resource use, construction choices and the quality of the passenger journey all shape the performance of airport infrastructure. Inviting students to address these themes offers a constructive route for bringing new talent into conversations that will influence the sector.

A Regional Skills Partnership

For Birmingham Airport and WMG Academy Trust, the collaboration creates a useful bridge between classroom learning and an active transport setting. The students’ proposals may have been developed as part of an educational challenge, but their focus on renewable energy, water use, access and sustainable construction reflects issues that airports must address in their long-term planning.

By pairing an infrastructure brief with an internship opportunity, the partnership gives participants a clearer view of possible careers while enabling BHX to support the development of skills across the Midlands. It is an encouraging model of industry engagement, placing young voices alongside practical discussions about the airport connection’s next chapter.
