The Christie Hospital Accelerates Net Zero Journey

A Major Step Toward Sustainability

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust has taken a significant leap forward in its net-zero ambitions, as its multi-technology decarbonisation scheme officially goes live. This groundbreaking project, which has been two years in the making, promises to deliver over £1 million in annual energy cost savings while reducing the hospital’s carbon footprint by an impressive 1,000 tonnes annually.

Funded in part by an £8 million grant through the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS), the initiative represents a key milestone in the NHS’s drive to achieve net zero by 2040.

A Comprehensive Energy Solution

At the heart of this decarbonisation effort is a fully integrated energy solution designed by Vital Energi. This state-of-the-art system includes:

  • Two air source heat pumps to provide renewable heating.
  • 640 solar panels installed on rooftops across the hospital, generating independent electricity.
  • A 2MW battery energy storage system (BESS) to store excess electricity and enable smarter energy usage.

The BESS system plays a crucial role in enhancing the hospital’s energy efficiency by storing surplus power for use during peak demand periods. This innovation not only reduces reliance on expensive imported electricity but also creates a smart grid that benefits the wider community.

Energy Efficiency Upgrades

The project also features a range of energy-saving measures, including:

  • Upgrading 3,000 light fittings to energy-efficient LEDs.
  • Replacing outdated steam heating infrastructure with a modern low-temperature hot water distribution system.
  • Optimising and upgrading the hospital’s Building Energy Management System (BMS) for improved operational efficiency.

Leadership and Collaboration

Alex Beedle, Head of Estates at The Christie, highlighted the project’s significance:

“We are very pleased with the decarbonisation scheme. The reduction in carbon emissions is estimated to be around 10% of the total from our site and is a big step towards achieving our ambitions for net zero in accordance with NHS targets. We will also make significant savings on our energy bill year after year.”

Phil Mottershead, Project Development Director at Vital Energi, echoed the sentiment:

“We are incredibly proud to help the Trust on their journey to net zero through the installation of low-carbon technologies and futureproofed energy infrastructure at The Christie Hospital. This ensures that the Trust not only meets its sustainability goals but also operates with greater efficiency in the years to come.”

A Framework for the Future

The project was delivered through the Carbon and Energy Fund Framework (CEF), a platform specifically designed to facilitate energy infrastructure projects for public sector organisations. By leveraging this framework, The Christie has ensured that the initiative aligns with the NHS’s broader sustainability objectives while demonstrating leadership in energy innovation.

A Broader Impact

The Christie’s decarbonisation project represents more than just an operational upgrade. It reflects a broader commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable healthcare practices. By integrating renewable energy sources, enhancing energy efficiency, and reducing reliance on fossil fuels, the hospital is setting a standard for other public sector organisations to follow.

Looking Ahead

As one of the NHS’s flagship sustainability projects, The Christie’s achievements offer a blueprint for similar initiatives across the healthcare sector. With substantial energy cost savings, reduced carbon emissions, and innovative technology integration, the hospital is leading the charge toward a greener future.

The Christie Hospital’s commitment to sustainability not only supports the NHS’s net-zero targets but also demonstrates how healthcare organisations can play a pivotal role in addressing the climate crisis.
