Nestled in a remote corner of the wild and enchanting West Highlands, you’ll find Nc’nean, a trailblazing Scottish whisky distillery that holds respect for nature at its heart.

The inspiring entrepreneur, Annabel Thomas, founded this independent distillery after leaving her job as a corporate strategist to become a passionate advocate for sustainability, innovation, and the art of crafting great whisky.

Annabel and her family had a dream of building a unique distillery on their family farm in Drimnin, Morvern Peninsula. Their vision was clear – to challenge the norms of whisky making while minimising their environmental impact. This desire for innovation led to the birth of Nc’nean, named after Neachneohain (pronounced Nc-nee-an), an ancient Gaelic legend known as the Queen of Spirits, who was a protector of nature and a trailblazer in her own right. This choice symbolises the distillery’s commitment to environmental stewardship and its determination to forge its path beyond conventional practices. 

Nc’nean’s award-winning distillery continuously experiments with new techniques to create distinct flavours in their spirits, embracing everything from yeast experiments to slower mashing and fermentation times, including the production of their Botanical Spirit using foraged botanicals local to the distillery.

Beyond their green initiatives, Nc’nean’s whisky is acclaimed for its delicious taste. Their Organic Single Malt Scotch has garnered multiple flavour awards, boasting smooth and elegant notes of citrus, peach, apricot, and spice. The distillery’s accolades include prestigious recognitions from the San Francisco Spirits competition and the International Wine & Spirits Competition. 

Remarkably, Nc’nean achieved net zero carbon emissions from its own operations back in 2021, surpassing the industry’s target by an astonishing 20 years. The distillery powers its operations with 100% renewable energy and offsets any remaining emissions through a partnership with Highland Carbon. Their commitment to sustainability goes beyond carbon emissions and extends to their choice of packaging – using 100% recycled clear glass bottles, significantly reducing their carbon footprint by 40%.

Certified organic and committed to promoting biodiversity, Nc’nean exclusively sources organic Scottish barley for its whisky production, firmly believing in regenerative organic agriculture methods. Their dedication to zero waste is commendable, with almost all waste diverted from landfills, and even the leftover barley is repurposed as feed for cows on the farm. Furthermore, Nc’nean’s innovative water cooling design saves 80% more water compared to traditional distilleries.

Looking ahead, Nc’nean has set ambitious targets for 2023 and beyond. They plan to work with farmers to reduce the carbon footprint of their barley further, enhance on-site energy efficiency, and assess the environmental performance of major suppliers. Their aim is to increase the recycled content of their bottles and minimise the environmental impact of staff travel to the remote distillery.
